San Francisco based Excuses For Skipping play the kind of soul-bearing space pop that sends hearts fluttering. Drawing inspiration from such disparate influences as The Cure, Stereolab and Gang Of Four, they create a sound that is wholly unique, yet instantly recognizable. Few bands are able to marry new wave noise with pop sensibilities as seamlessly as Excuses For Skipping does. Whether they’re laying down a buzzing drone or dueling and weaving around each other, their music makes for compulsive listening as singer Linda Moody belts out the lyrics with wide-eyed ferocity and guitarist Tammy Fortin delivers sinuous post-punk guitar stabs. The airtight rhythm section of bassist Wendy Brents and drummer Allison Duke hold down the bottom end with the kind of drive that rivals U2 or Coldplay. -----The completion of their debut full-length CD, “Out of Work Early†is the culmination of years of painstaking studio-craft. While their recorded sound is pristine and rich, their live shows brim with energy and excitement.
