"Mind the gap"
Hi! This page is dedicated to London's famous underground - the Tube.
Life began for the tube on 10 January 1863, making it the oldest underground system in the world and with 268 stations running over approximately 250 miles of line, it's also the longest.
The Tube serves most of Greater London and also some areas outside of the capital, carrying approximately 3 million people every day.
But there's a lot more to the Tube than just trains and stations. It's also a place of music and art, allowing people to showcase their talents, from posters to large exhibitions. Poetry can also be found on the Underground to help poetry to reach a wider audience.
The Tube has also been featured in films, including 'Sliding Doors', '28 days Later', 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' and 'Bourne Identity' and has featured in television programmes.
It has also been the inspiration for music by artists including Paul Weller and The Kinks, been used in music videos and been the central subject for some literature. Not only that, but the Tube also features in board games.
We want to hear about your experiences of travelling on the Tube, your images of the Tube and any videos. Maybe you've filmed a great busker or are a busker in the Underground. At which station does your heart lie and what you like and dislike about the Tube!

My Interests

On the 1st of June, 2008, drinking was made illegal on London transport. To mark the last night you are allowed to drink alcohol, a Tube party was held on the Underground. Here are some videos of the night.......

"I've always been taken with the Tube. I used to fall in love on the Tube all the time. You sit there opposite someone, your eyes meet, nothing is said and then you both get up and go off into your own worlds. It's like this weird underground network and I've always found it fascinating" - Orlando Bloom

Music:

Busking is very popular on the tube. You'll find many different styles of music from electric guitarists to opera singers. In 2001, London underground introduced a license system to control numbers and quality of performers which was launched by Julian Lloyd Webber, so the music on the Tube is of a high standard.

Famous buskers who have performed on the Underground after they were famous include Moby, Julian Lloyd Webber and Tasmin Little.

Have you seen a great busker on the underground who deserves a mention?

Musicians including Paul Weller and The Kinks have written songs about the Underground. Images of the Underground have also been used on the inner cover of an album by Blur and it has also been featured in music videos by Alex Parks and the Prodigy who filmed their video for 'Firestarter' at the disused tunnel at Aldwych

There's more to the Underground than you might think! > > > > >

The Underground is a place for artists to showcase work. The Undergrounds link with art dates back to 1908 when leading artists began to display work. In 2000, 'Platform for Art was launched' sponsored by London Underground to continue the Underground's links with art and to "create an environment for positive impact and to enhance and enrich the journeys of the passengers that are its audience".

Here are a few examples of artwork on the Underground.....

This is artwork by Beatriz Milhazes at Gloucester Roadstation

An exhibition by Brian Griffiths called 'Life is a Laugh'

'Underground Abstract' by Cornelia Parker which has been displayed on millions of pocket Tube maps

Poetry can also be found on the Underground. 'Poetry on the Underground' was set up in 1986 to bring poetry to a wider audience

The Map

Designed originally by Harry Beck in 1933, the map has been updated over the years, but the basic design principles remain.

It has become a design classic, coming second in a television competition for the most well known British design icon.

Movies:

The Tube has been featured in films such as Sliding Doors, 28 Days Later, Arsenal Stadium Mystery, The Good Shepherd, Atonement, Bridget Jone's diary, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Bourne Ultimatum and Love Actually. The James Bond film Die Another Day featured a fictional Tube station but is thought to be inspired by real life when the government used Down Street Tube station as a shelter during World War 2.

Television:

The Tube has been featured in television dramas including the BBC's 'Hustle' and 'Spooks'.

It has also been used in ITV's 'Primeval', Sky Three's 'The Tube'. A programme has also been made about the history of the Tube and another on buskers who perform on the Tube.

Books:

Authors have been inspired by the Underground. Books written include 'Neverwhere' by Neil Gaiman, 'V for Vendetta', 'Tunnel vision' and 'King Solomon's Carpet' written by Ruth Rendell.
