Four basic tenets drive everything the Network of Spiritual Progressives does:
*Foster a New Bottom Line of love, generosity & ecological sensitivity in our economy, education, media, & government.
*Foster a new global consciousness and solidarity.
*Promote awe, radical amazement, gratitude & developing an inner spiritual life.
*Challenge the misuse of God & religion by the Religious Right and religio-phobia on the Left.
Progressives of all shapes and forms: Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Baptists, Evangelicals, Atheists, Agnostics, spiritual but non-Religious people... basically anyone that wants to support the work of the Network of Spiritual Progressives to work towards unity, peace, and a better world! Favorite quotes on progressive issues straight from “The Left Hand of God†book by Michael Lerner:
• Evolution vs. Creationists: "...there is no reason why various religious explanations for the creation of the universe should not be taught to students, as long as they are not taught as science but as cultural history in a humanities or social science course-as long as, ... the Genesis story is taught along-side the Navajo creation myth about the Grand Canyon and the Babylonian and other accounts.
• Politics: "...we need to stop fantasizing that we are going to find a magical candidate who embodies all that we believe in … instead [WE need to] create a movement that MAKES it necessary for any candidate to respond to our message."
• Same Sex Marriages: "There should be no criteria with regard to gender of partners or their sexual orientation, ethnicity, race, religion or political orientation ..."
• Abortion: "Make it safe, legal, and rare … And make childbearing safe, economically supported, and surrounded by a loving community that celebrates the mystery and miracle of life and that honors and rewards the parent or parents who have undertaken the difficult and beautiful task of raising children."
• Environment: "affirming human specialness [is] not a license for destruction but rather an empowerment, a confirmation of our special responsibility toward the well-being of the planet ... we receive the earth from the care of our ancestors ... we have a responsibility to leave it to future generations in good shape. We also have a responsibility to our fellow humans who happen to live down the river … A spiritual approach to the environment is about protecting the poor and powerless from suffering ecological devastation."
• Health Care: "...well-being can only be achieved by a health system that pays attention to all the dimensions of human life ... we should understand that the health of our body is linked to health of our economic, political, and ecological system outside of our body."
• Foreign Policy: "The well-being and safety of our ourselves, our families, our communities, and our world depends on the well-being of every other human being on the planet. This is not just sweet sentiment-it is cold political reality."
