Hip Hop Congress uses the culture of Hip Hop to inspire
young people to get involved social action, civic service,
and cultural creativity. Hip Hop Congress is the product
of a merger of artists and students, music and community.
It is significant because it provides one of few paths for
highly creative and often disenfranchised youth where they
can channel their energy into a strong and organized force
aimed at improving their community.
Since being established in 2001, the UC Irvine chapter of HHC has made a major impact on its local community. The greatest effect has been consistently deliverying high quality, yet mostly free shows representing the Hiphop culture in one of the most conservative cities in one of the most conservative counties in California. HHC's quarterly stages have been graced with the presence of the likes of Ghostface Killah, MC Supernatural, One.Be.Lo, Percee P, Emanon, the Procussions, and many more. But its contributions don't simply stop in the field of entertainment. HHC continually expands the knowledge of its constituency in a variety of ways, from having workshops on the various elements of Hiphop, to talks from the likes of KRS-1 and Zulu King Mark Luv.
