A Juried Tribute Art Show in Resistance to Desert Rock
As artists, use your art to give voice to the voiceless! Submit your art of expression, art of protest against pollution, and art on behalf of the environment.
Due to the recent proposal to build a third coal-burning power plant in the Four Corners area, I would like to give voice to all people of the area who will be affected. This includes people from the communities of: Shiprock, Farmington, Hogback, Sweetmeat, Sanostee, Tocito, Red Mesa, Two Grey Hills, Oaksprings, Naschitti, Newcomb, Tohatchi, Gallup, Aztec, Bloomfield, NM, also in the Colorado communities of: Durango, Mancos, Cortez, Hesperus, Bayfield and beyond. The indigenous peoples of the following tribes will also be affected: Navajo Nation, Ute Mountain Ute, Southern Ute, Hopi and the Jicarilla Apache reservation.
The San Juan Valley near the Four Corners in New Mexico houses two coal-powered power plants. A thickening yellow gray cloud of carbon dioxide pollution has continually grown in girth over the years. As a result, it doesn’t snow anymore here. The rain clouds pass right over, leaving the land parched. Our valley, once full of huge strapping cottonwood trees, now stores drying and dying trees. The valley is dying and the inhabitants who have settled here daily inhale filmy polluted haze, and exhale tainted mercury breath. As a life-long resident of this area I have watched the physical decline of the flora and fauna, animal life and too, the ill health affects that have come to plague my Diné people. For generations, my family has planted their crops, grazed their livestock and built their homes in the place the Diné call Totá, or Farmington as it was later named by the Anglos. In a couple months a new third coal-powered called Desert Rock will be built on the Navajo Reservation. The $3 billion power plant is projected to produce 1,500 megawatts of electricity for places off the reservation, and instead what we will get is more mercury and carbon dioxide emissions.
This proposed power plant has already negatively affected us mentally, spiritually and soon physically. Take a stand for the earth! Stand for the Navajo Elders who are being ignored! Be inspired, create and submit your work on behalf of our precious land, our Mother Earth.
Sincerely, Venaya Yazzie, Diné / Hopi Artist
