Joss Mennen started his career about 18 years ago with the band Zinatra. This band was a big hit in Europe, South America and Asia but after two albums, the band split up in the early nineties. Working as a session musician, Joss voice appeared in the backing vocals on many important rock releases for bands like Danger Danger, Craaft and Scorpions, just to name a few.
During this period Joss also worked as recording engineer and producer and for a while he ended up as studio-manager for Markant Recording Studios ( NL)
In 1994 Joss teamed up with guitarist Erik van de Kerkhof. Their way of songwriting matched and the beginning of Mennen was a fact.
Generally in his skill of songwriting Joss says during all these years , I always prefer someone around who triggers me and supports me instrumentally , but with Mennen it turned out to be the whole band !! .
His choice for microphone ; On stage Joss uses the Electrovoice 767a . In the studio it depends , what kind of songs you are working on. For the heavy wall of guitar kind of songs a AKG 414 works very well , but for more open songs , like ballads , Joss always is looking for a more warmer approach using different kind of big membrane condensator mics , like the tubes from Neumann . For the Freakazoid album he had a very good experience using the Audio Technica 4070 but recently during the recordings of Planet Black Joss did all the vocal tracks with a big membrane of Rode at Erwin Muspers Studio The Bamboo Room.
