I was born in Humboldt County and my parents were hippies so naturally I was exposed to a lot of reggae music in my early years
But then around the age of 13 I fell in love with rap music. It started with Ice T, Paris, Public Enemy, BDP, NWA, Too Short, and Two Live Crew to name a few. A couple years later I became a DJ. I made mix tapes and played a lot of local house parties. At that time I loved Dr. Dre, Snoop, Tupac, The Dog Pound etc. Then I started checking out the underground bay area music like Mac Dre, Mac Mall, JT the Bigga Figga, San Quinn etc. I respected this style of rap because they were doing it all independent, making their own beats, engineering, mixing, and putting out their own CDs making a name for themselves. This is when I got into making beats. 1 Ton and I would make beats for local rappers but they didnt seem to be into it as much as we were so we started rapping too.
Rapping and making beats always came easy to me since I was a DJ for a couple years first. DJing gave me the ear and understanding about how the music was put together. Since then Ive been studying every rapper and producer that I respected comparing our music to theirs. Every time I listen to music I try to study it: Why does it sound the way it does? How is the mix so good? What equipment are they using? My listening has since broadened to every type of rap/hip hop music. Now Im influenced by every song I hear that I respect. Ill play Blackalicious, Living Legends, Atmosphere, Talib Qweli but Ill also bump some DJ Quik, Scarface, Twista, Ludachris, and Young Jeezy too.
Since I do most of the production and Im 1 of the 2 MCs our sound has always been a little bit of underground, gangster, mainstream, and any other type of rap or hip hop you can think of. Thats why Im so excited about our new CD Straight outta Humboldt, we got it all on there!!!
Sounds Like: Definitely the West Coast influenced my drums but I've been trying to get into sampling more recently to make our music be more universal...
Hopefully sounds like something u feel, naddaImean?
