The Silents - 23
..
THE PASSPORT LABEL was born in November 2005 in order to raise the profile of Australian music in the UK. The label was created by Zoe White, a native Melbournian then living in London and with several years experience working with independent record labels in both countries. Born out of frustration towards the amount of quality Australian music overlooked internationally,
THE PASSPORT LABEL aims to give Australian acts greater access and exposure to one of the biggest and most influential music markets in the world.
THE PASSPORT LABEL's initial release (VISA001) was a limited 7" vinyl pressing of
No Way Out by Melbourne-based
LOVE OF DIAGRAMS. The single gained radio play from Radio 1/6Music's Steve Lamacq and XFM's John Kennedy. Having supported the 7" release with a week of well received London shows,
LOVE OF DIAGRAMS headed off to Chicago to record a new album with Bob Weston. The band played a series of US shows in early 2006 including SXSW in Austin, and have recently signed a worldwide deal with the good people at Matador Records , thus becoming the first Australian band to grace the Matador roster in over 15 years.
THE PASSPORT LABEL's second release (VISA002) came from Melbourne's undeniably fantastic
CHILDREN COLLIDE -
Frozen Armies is out on very limited 7" now. The single is distributed in the UK through our good friends Forte and is still available from selected independent record stores and also directly through The Passport Label website. Children Collide played their debut UK shows in October 2006, including shows in London, Glasgow and a showcase gig at Manchester's annual industry shindig In The City and we'll eat our hats if they don't go on to even more amazing things...
In order to represent the entire nation of Australia and not just Melbourne,
THE PASSPORT LABEL selected a band all the way from Perth, in the far west of the country, for the 7†imprint’s third release (VISA003).
SNOWMAN is a curious moniker for a group of musicians originating from a notoriously hot city. The rather sensational song
You Are A Casino is taken from the band’s ambitious self-titled debut, which raised the eyebrows of more than a few Australian music connoisseurs.
Hailing from Perth,
THE PANICS are set to be Australia's next big export. The double a-side single
Don't Fight It/Get Us Home (VISA004) was released on March 31 by
THE PASSPORT LABEL.
Don't Fight It is a horn-driven pop classic with glorious 60s strings and harmonies.
Get Us Home has a darker feel with uneasy, brooding arrangements set against the vast Australian landscape. Here are two great songs from a band brimming with commercial potential and set to take the world by storm.
Another Perth band,
THE SILENTS join
THE PASSPORT LABEL roster on June 23 with the release of their single,
23, a track brooding with dizzying harmonies bleeding into tripped-out garage-rock. The band are set to make their mark internationally with their unique and intensely polarized live sound, in which their own mix of raw, blues-driven rock and roll sits hand-in-hand with hallucinatory, melancholic ballads.
