BBC 1XTRA'S CRISSY CRISS & MC FLAK ON ROAD
Flak's first experience of drum n bass was at the age of 10 when he was introduced to the Jungle Massive collective series on tape by a friends older brother.
Tunes such as "Superhero" and smokey joe's "Special request" got him hooked immediately.
A few years down the line at the age of 15 Flak started buying drum n bass tape packs on the regular and this is when he got his first proper exposure to drum n bass MC's.
He was amazed by the way the MC's chatted over the tunes and the way in which they hyped up a set. Influenced by the likes of Shabba D and Foxy, Flak soon started going to his local raves and began to write lyrics.
Writing lyrics and chatting them at parties was his first experience of playing out, but it wasnt until he reached 17 that he played at his first proper dance, in front of over 400 people at Chichester university run by Dave Holness (Defunked Records) called "Infectious."
From there Flak gained a regular slot at Dave's local drum n bass night, and began to progress and develop his style and technique. After a few months flak started to get more and more bookings at local dnb nights, and was making mix tapes on a regular basis and would listen to them to improve on his last set.
After the experience of playing at these events Flak gained hunger for playing on radio and promoting his own events, and made these his new goals.
At the age of 18 Flak started running his own night "Motivation" in order to give up and coming artists more exposure and a chance to play out. It was at this time that Flak hooked up with Kunninmindz radio (www.kunninmindz.com) and was offered a radio slot by Mindz (Owner of KM) longside DJ Payne every friday 5-7pm. Joining KM gave flak a lot more exposure to worldwide listeners from all over UK all the way to places like Canada and Austrailia. After his move to radio, regular bookings for the young budding artist began to build up and .
Flak has been promoting the drum n bass nite "Motivation" for 2 years now, this event specialises in giving fresh up and coming talent a chance to shine.
In February 2005 Flak started the Funder firm a crew that specialise in promoting drum n bass dj's and mc's through its Agency and promotions.
Flak has recently completed a two year course in music technology, and has been busy working on many different projects that he plans to bring to light in the not so distant future.
2005 was a successful year for Flak as he recieved many bookings from around the UK and also played gigs abroad.
