About Me
The Januaries are broken up..but i thought i would post a page..Ever since The Januaries first emerged from the shadowy recesses of Los Angeles underground culture, smitten observers have attempted to define the groups edgy allure -- a blend of Euro style, surrealistic soundscapes and futuristic grooves. The Januaries have been described as Bardot meets The Doors. Herb Alpert meets Shirley Manson. 60s go-go hedonism meets 21st century apocalypse. But inevitably, all descriptions end up focusing on a key trait: a simmering sensuality that lies at the core of each song.Singer/guitarist Debbie Diamond good-naturedly acknowledges the appeal. I was always trying to hide my sexuality before, she admits with a casual laugh, but the music were doing now is straight out of the bedroom.Diamond provides a stunning focal point within the creative maelstrom created by her bandmates: John Nau ..boards, trumpeter Mitch Maker and Januaries co-leader Rick Boston on guitar.Together, the group members strike a delicate balance between insightful, literate observations and unbridled libido. For proof, one need only contrast the sheer pop appeal of Love Has Flown with the upfront raunch of Black Transmission and angular sonics of Angel. The group finds its true collective voice in the drowsy, beatific embrace of songs like Girls Insane, Jon Sings, Chocolate and Strawberries, and Love and the Devil. In this context, Diamonds softly purred lyrics provide the perfect counterpoint to her bandmates evocative sonic tapestries. The slinky, wide-ranging aesthetic is purely intentional. Im the more pop member of the band, says Diamond. The guys are very eclectic. Were all about mutating grooves, nods Boston; the songs are mutating even as we record them. The Januaries live shows illustrate the groups increasingly muscular sound, a seemingly inevitable outgrowth of the creative alchemy that began in January 1998 when Diamond first linked up with Rick Boston. Choosing to call themselves The Januaries (the month they first began working together -- a fresh start, a clean break), the pair was determined to follow their musical instincts wherever they may lead...no matter how quixotic the final destination might be.Boston, a founding member of the critically acclaimed iconoclastic combo Low Pop Suicide, proved to be the ideal partner for Diamond. He immediately recognized the strength of Diamonds diverse musical influences, which ranged from cutting-edge trip hop to 80s new wave and Brazil 66. More importantly, he shared her instincts in pursuing an ambitious, forward-thinking musical trajectory.Since joining forces, Diamond and Boston have continually broadened and refined that shared vision. In the process, theyve embarked on a creative path fraught with peril and beauty, in equal measure. The results are nothing short of cathartic. I sometimes have problems communicating with people, says Diamond, but music seems to be a river that I step into, and then it becomes easy. I see things in my mind, and
then I just try to tell the story through the music.Within The Januaries sonic adventurism, those stories ta
ke on an otherworldly resonance and power. Find out for yourself: immersed in the groups enigmatic, sultry sound, its easy to see why The Januaries eDONOTBLOCKOURADSmbody provocative pop music at its best.
