About Me

I am a misanthropic humanist.

Ashmont Media Website (that's my company). I am very lucky, as I get to work with such great organizations in Boston as First Night, Opera Boston, the ICA, New England Foundation for the Arts, The Boston Conservatory, the Boston Comedy Festival and others. I also co-own, with Joe Pernice, Ashmont Records, which I'm pretty sure is the best record label in Dorchester, Massachusetts. But I could be wrong. Feel free to let me know.

I don't blog too often here, but I do blog somewhat regularly at www.pernicebrothers.com, and seasonally at www.firstnight.org. If you care. But I certainly can understand why you wouldn't. I worry a lot about the weather.

My Interests

Public policy, art, popular culture, keeping good company. I am terrified about the misguided, selfish, ethnocentric policies of our current government. In order to escape those fears and concerns, I turn to my faithful companion Charlie Ashmont, who also has a myspace page Charlie's page . I love live theater, museums, dance performances and cultural history.

I'd like to meet:

Madeleine Albright. Ted Sorenson. Oh, you mean here? You know, it's true what they say. I'd never join a club that would have me as a member. Lloyd Dobler? Someone who witnessed the Great Molasses Flood? Corita Kent (I know I could get her to tell me if it's Ho Chi Minh)? A good contractor?

Music:

Pernice Brothers (payroll), Dusty Springfield, AC/DC, Aimee Mann, Elvis Costello, The Grifters, Sammi Smith, Badfinger, Shelby Lynne, Lucinda Williams, Beach Boys (Brian Wilson), Bee Gees, Smiths, Wilco, Pixies, Those Bastard Souls, Carole King, John Cunningham, Left Banke, Matthew Sweet, Cheap Trick, Tammy Wynette, Charlie Rich, Peter Bruntnell, Lyres, Wire, The Clash, Bobbie Gentry, Ramones, Ella Fitzgerald, Red Red Meat, XTC, so very many more.

Movies:

There are thousands. It's a Wonderful Life, Moulin Rouge, Red River, The Searchers, Godfathers I & II, all Sergio Leone, lots of Altman, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, lots of Scorcese, Breakfast at Tiffany's, stuff with good chase scenes and explosions. Musicals. LOVE Busby Berkeley. Thin Man, Grapes of Wrath, My Man Godfrey, Daddy Long Legs, Howard Hawks, Frank Capra, Sullivan's Travels, Palm Beach Story, Philadelphia Story. True confession: Despite my film school-predictable tastes, I prefer my movies in English. I try. Really I do. But there you have it - my personal shame - ethnocentrism in film.

Television:

So much TV, so little time. I watch way too much of it. Daily Show, Flight of the Conchords, The Wire, Friday Night Lights, Life, Weeds, The Office (US), Frontline, Rankin Bass Christmas specials. Late great: Six Feet Under, Gilmore Girls, Homicide: Life on the Streets, Freaks and Geeks, X Files, Rome, Veronica Mars, Wonderfalls, Sports Night, Buffy, Angel, The Office (UK). Used to be great, but now on a bad path: 24, Prison Break. Thank God for TiVo.

Books:

Oh so many. Nicole Kraus, Nick Flynn, Joan Didion, Jonathan Safran Foer, Tom O'Brien, Mark Haddon, Jonathan Lethem, Michael Patrick MacDonald, George Pelecanos, Dennis Lehane, Curtis Sittenfeld, Nick Hornby, Mary Gaitskill, Jeannette Walls, Elizabeth Berg. Newish and freshly read - Marisha Pessl - Special Topics in Calamity Physics, Gregory Galloway - As Simple as Snow.

Heroes:

St. Theresa Little Flower, Amelia Earhart, Madeleine Albright, Ted Kennedy, Robert Byrd, Thurgood Marshall, Justice Margaret Marshall, John Murtha, Theodore Sorenson, Al Gore, Amy Sherman-Palladino.

I feel bad

I have one of those Garmin GPS things, because it belonged to the band during their touring days, and having a sense of direction is NOT one of my talents.  Yesterday, around rush hour, I was dri...

Mitty Cent

It's too bad about Mitt Romney dropping out of the race.  The guy was like a one-man economic stimulus package.  How much money did he spend?  What will all the printers and media outle...

I'm not ashamed.  From today's Boston Globe, the "Gulity Pleasures" feature (scroll down to get to me) - OursBirthday partiesBirthday parties are pretty stupid. Why celebrate me? I didn't do...

Finding private funding

So, here in the world of non-profit arts, where, ironically, I spend most of my profit-making hours, there has been a shift away from government funding over the years, as the budget cuts for art...

Rated "C" for cancer

Movies and TV shows have ratings for language, sex and violence.  Records are often labeled with parental advisories.  But none of these diversions are rated for the really useful things l...

The REAL Paul Anka

Joe will vouch for me on this one.  I get confused.  I mix and embellish stories.  It's not lying or misunderstanding exactly; it's adapting for my logic capacity.  For instance, w...

The Wire Oh. My. God.  This is the best season yet, and there was a VERY high threshold.  Two eps to go for me, but I can feel my heart breaking already.  I have to keep remin...

I (think I) try really hard not to judge people based on appearances.  Something happened this morning that shook me a little.  I went out early to walk the dog, and noticed as I was leaving...

Pernicisms

Inch by bitter inch.  OK, thats not exactly fair, because the making of this new record has been fairly stress-free.  Inch by semisweet inch?  Also historic, in that I was allowed into ...
