When you start an album with a song that's a tribute to yourself and your skills -- "Frequency (Denn 101)" -- you had better live up to your own hype. Luckily, Dennis Smith passes that test on "All Water, No Dirt," a title that celebrates the rapper's fluidity on the mic.
Through 12 tracks, Smith keeps the vibe fresh and interesting, showcasing a copious vocabulary and a finesse that's absent in many of the CDs that cross my desk. Nevermind that his well-crafted, substantive lyrics are laid atop fresh, buoyant and memorable beats that enhance Dennis' songwriting and versatile flow.
A well-balanced album, there are traditional hip-hop braggadocio cuts, tunes rich with social commentary ("Life Support"), and headnodders perfect for riding around in your car ("Loud Talk (Pt. 2)"). Many songs are also sprinkled with pop-culture references, complex rhyme patterns and clever metaphors involving body parts and functions (which remind me a little of RZA, whom I love).
Finally, and perhaps most important, Smith's catchy hooks get plastered to your head. He's the real deal, and we're on board.
