Atheist were one of the mainstays of the Florida death metal scene of the late eighties, and by the time of their third album they had evolved into what they themselves term "death/jazz" (somewhat similar in style to Cynic, if less fusion-based). Elements in particular won the band much acclaim and they seemed ready to jump to the next level, but internal strife led to their breakup in the mid-nineties, with Kelly Schaefer eventually forming the more rock-oriented band Neurotica. Now a few years has past and they are back together and will be doing shows for the future.
