I'd like to meet:
WELL. CERTAINLY NOT ANY ACADEMIC TYPES!!!!!!! (now, read that again, but this time in a sort of "the man with two brains/the jerk" era steve martin, kind of voice.)
Music:
MUSIC- a driving force and inspiration to most of what i do. i'll let some wisdom from duke ellington shine through right here..... "there are two kinds of music, good and bad.".....also...." it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing, doo-wop doo-wop doo-wop!!!" so i'd rather make a "playlist" of music that's on current rotation in and on my sound system, than to list them all in a paragraph blur, losing, fogetting, and generally not doing justice to alot of great artists. know what i mean? there's just to much to list. so......... current playlist:1.rahsaan roland kirk-volunteered slavery, a joyous soulful masterpiece. 2.caribou-yeti, great recent stuff from manitoba/dan snaith. 3.the band- we can talk about it now, from big pink, a great funky country tune.4.dead texan- music/animation duo, great almost ambient music with a bonus dvd of animated shorts by the band. i love stuff like this.
Movies:
current favorites and sometimes always: 1.ROBERT DOWNEY SR.(not jr.)is at the top of my pile lately. i really recommend checking out this unique artist. notably, his new documentary, "rittenhouse square" as funny and absurd as any of his past films, but instead of being written and performed, it's captured naturally and spontaneously. subtle and charming. "pound" from 1970, this film is kind of at the opposite end of "rittenhouse", a truly surreal analogy on the human condition with people portraying the dogs....and a cat....and penguin in a city dog pound. great score also, features antonio "huggy bear' fargas, and the debut of robert downey jr. as a puppy. 2.SUPERSUCKER- jeff daniels wrote and directed this great absurdist farce on door to door vacuum cleaner salesmen. 3.THE MAGIC CHRISTIAN 4.THE KING OF HEARTS 5.MAP OF THE HUMAN HEART 6. the assassination of richard nixon 7.CUTTER'S WAY 8. STORY OF A THREE DAY PASS- early pre-blaxploitation melvin van peebles. a touching, and frustrating film of a black g.i on a short furlough who encounters love and language barriers with a local girl in france. shot in the 60's, in a "new wave" style, with a great score by van peebles himself. 10.DIVINE INTERVENTION 11. ANYTHING BY HAL ASHBY 22. ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS w/ a bit part by adam west. just see it, it's cool. a childhood favorite. 23. STOKED: the rise and fall of mark "gator" ragowski man damn! does this documentary bring back alot of memories and early influences. ole'
Books:
beasts, gods, and men by ferdiand ossendowski, views of a nearsighted cannoneer by seymour krim (severely underrated!), love and hydrogen by jim shepard (painstakeingly and painfully witty) confessions of a dangerous mind by chuck barris ( there's a reason charlie kaufman adapted it to the screen, and look who wrote it, chuck barris. what, lying game show host?!?!? you say? no!! i say one of the last situationists!! let's ask robert downey sr. (no!! not jr.)) chafed elbows by robert downey sr. ( the movie is one thing, but the book....it's a screenplay chock full of pictures, making it a sort of picture book for the counterculture set. plus, it has a bonus, forward and "backward" that's both hilarious and not far from the opening and closing rants of ewan mcgregor in trainspotting.),
