Partycular: In metaphysics, partyculars are, one might say, identifiedby what they are not: they are not abstractions, not multiply-instantiated--i.e. they are concrete.(There are, however,theories of abstract partyculars or tropes.) Hence, Socrates is apartycular (there's only one Socrates-the-teacher-of-Plato and onecannot make copies of him, e.g., by cloning him, without introducingnew, distinct partyculars). Fun for instance, by contrast, is not apartycular, because (it is held by metaphysical realists) it isabstract and multiply-instantiated (this show, that game, and thatgirl's temper are all funny).
The fact of the matter is that all such terms are used by musicafficionados with a rough-and-ready idea of how they work. If there isconfusion or lack of agreement about the specifics, that is areflection of the fact that music afficionados have many competingmetaphysical theories that inform more precise, but idiosyncratic,accounts of the meanings of these terms. Hence, for example, forconvenience in formulating a solution to the problem offun,'partycular' can be pressed into service in describing thepartycular instance of grooveness of a partycular record--even thoughgrooveness (being abstract) is precisely the sort of thing that is notsupposed to be partycular.
