Kim / Power of Paper zines

Someday, a HUMAN will be President!

About Me

What is a zine? (pronounced like magazine without the maga), by Alex Wrekk, co-owner of Microcosm Publishing: A zine is an independently created publication. The contents are anything you want them to be like; personal experiences and stories, political ideologies, music related writing, gardening tips, travel stories, comics, photography, or anything else you like. Zines can be put together by one person or a group of people and they are usually photocopied.
Do-It-Yourself ethics: [Zines are about] D.I.Y. ethics and creative reuse. It is about looking at something and saying "I can do that!" rather than waiting for someone to do it for you. It is about taking control away from corporate consumer influence and creating things on your own terms.
For your very own copy of STOLEN SHARPIE REVOLUTION by Alex Wrekk, feel free to frolic amongst the happy radicals at http://www.microcosmpublishing.com @@@My Heart@@@: 100% independently-produced on genuine paper: Yes, with Mayo, Liquid and Vent zines are ALL available for the mere price of a load of laundry. Please see past blog for mailing address. Trades are always welcome. Also, please look for the Jan.2007 release of TOIL/Help!, a publication filled to the brim with words n' visuals about our working and volunteering lives. Race-walking Noticias:
Nov.25,2006: My pace keeps improving w/ each race--from a snail's (Cowtown Half) to a sort of bulldog hobble (Clarksburg Half) to a most recent turkey trot (Run to Feed the Hungry). Let's hear it for plus-sized women race-walking! Big Hips Hooray!
Nov.11,2006: T and I are run-walking the Paul Reese Memorial Clarksburg Half Marathon tomorrow! Maybe you can join us next year? http://www.ffsac.com
OCT.1 2006: T and I completed the Sacramento Cowtown Half Marathon! T's finishing photo is HOT, I'm starin' at the ground in mine (trying not to fall over in exhaustion): http://www.brightroom.com/view_event.asp?EVENTID=13877&P WD= (You can search by our last name.) "WHEN I WAS A BOY I WAS TOLD THAT ANYBODY COULD BECOME PRESIDENT. NOW I'M BEGINNING TO BELIEVE IT." Clarence Darrow lived between 1857 and 1938, bless his heart. +++WhoAmI? I'm a 35-yr.-old bi woman in a committed same-sex relationship, with two elderly felines owning us. Lady T and I are registered domestic partners, but if it were legal, we could say we've been married since 1998. I'm a practicing speech therapist, but wonder what this world would look like if we communicated with writings, artwork, music and gestures, with speech as a last resort? Animals Rock!:
JULY 2006: A lil' volunteering for the Orland, CA Farm Sanctuary (Ed. Dept.) was a massive highlight of my summer (hopefully I was able to make at least a small dent in the loads of work that needs to be done for these amazing animals). I highly recommend driving up there for a $2 (cheap!) tour on any given Saturday before the end of their tour season in Nov. http://www.farmsanctuary.orgembed allowScriptAccess="never" enableJSURL="false" enableHREF="false" saveEmbedTags="true" src="http://lads.myspace.com/slides/slideshow_random.swf?u=3 0526748" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="426"

My Interests

Hostelling; giving scratch-ewe-oles to our old cats; learning how to play chopped up, scaled down versions of songs on piano; taking forever to read a book; collecting bookmarks; eating vegan and raw foods; libraries; zines; yoga and meditation; birdwatching with my sweetmate; race-walk training for half marathons; gathering courage to speak up for myself; and watching the sky.

I'd like to meet:

Warm-hearted humanoids who talk trash, feminists of any gender, Dr. McDougall, the mystery cats who keep "marking their territory" on our front lawn, any rescued farm animal and the folks who help them, Vic Chesnutt, undercover animal rights activists who work in slaughterhouses, beings from other planets, Kim Novak (is she still alive?), John Robbins, anyone who can make vegan french toast and my 8th grade English teacher, Mrs. Gerard, who taught me how to love language.Pic courtesy of TCE...and Sacramento, which manages to sometimes give us a reason to forgive the Allergy Capital of the World.

Music:

8/31/06 Tucked away on a tiny piece of paper in the vinyl album of Spandau Ballet's TRUE, which I joyfully discovered at my neighborhood Goodwill for a buck:
"Nikki- Thanks for letting me listen to your album- sorry I kept it so long. -Lesli"
Did Lesli (with an "i") make herself a lil' cassette of the album before giving it back to Nikki? Most important, how could Nikki give up this LP (it did eventually land at Goodwill), INCLUDING the fantastic photo of the very hairy-legged band in short-shorts on the inner sleeve? Although now that I have the actual lyrics to the song "True," I'm puzzled by the use of such phrases as "toe to toe," "thrill in my head," "Sand's a time of it's own" and "seaside arms." What are seaside arms? Can sand be a time of it is own [read that very carefully]? How? General music stuff: My ears are tickled by I DON'T WANT TO FEED YOU ('CAUSE YOU PUKE WHEN I DO) by Ears Back; THE HARDEST THING and NINE SONGS by Teresa Esguerra/Local Honey; Sleater-Kinney; The Inversions; X; Naked Nathan and Champagne; The Murmurs; Lucinda Williams; Shelley Campbell; Sirius Music stuff; Vic Chesnutt; Black Flag; Rollins Band; Victoria Williams; anyone who can play anything at all on piano; Fugazi; Le Tigre; Van Morrison; Marcus Roberts; Chris Spheeris; Rush; Neil Young; Heart; Wilco; Emmylou Harris; Joan Baez; Mills Brothers; Andrews Sisters; Janis Joplin; Bing Crosby; PJ Harvey; X-Ray Spex; Suzanne Vega; Cyndi Lauper; Ani DiFranco; True Margrit; Loretta Lynn; Dolly Parton; Ella Fitzgerald; Dinah Washington; Billie Holiday; Queen Latifah; Bread; and any music stumbled upon in dinky venues when discovering new cities....and, sometimes my brain shorts out and I find myself digging up old country music or bad '80's tapes.

Movies:

Anything anything anything by Michael Moore, also: Antonia's Line, Moonstruck, Mary Poppins, Lady and the Tramp, The Last Waltz, What's Cooking?, Home for the Holidays, Pieces of April, Saved!, Sixteen Candles, Boys Don't Cry, Roman Holiday, The Accused, Far From Heaven, Living Out Loud, CAMP, Flashdance, Run Lola Run, Footloose, Barefoot in the Park, any b&w flick featuring Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, Kim Novak or Jimmy Stewart, funky documentaries checked out of my local library (you've gotta see Pale Male, about a N.Y. City red-tailed hawk) and Chew On This (PETA documentary)....and so much more...so many talented filmmakers and storytellers out there...

Television:

Gilmore Girls, The Sopranos, FREE SPEECH T.V., Sundance Channel, Independent Film Channel, Documentary Channel and PBS. I liked Season 1 of The L Word, but Seasons 2 & 3 were pretty terrible. I'm a whore for well-written shows (which are rare, at least in my limited exposure to TV).

Books:

It took me 6-8 months to get through ZEN AND THE ART OF MOTORCYCLE MAINTENANCE (R.Pirsig) and another few months to finish TROPIC OF CANCER (H.Miller). I'm back on the literary time-torture train this Oct.06 by starting the massive chunk of hotness and genius, SEXUS (Miller again). I figure I should have a life outside of work again by next Summer 07. (Oh wait- there's a flippin' zine to finish!) Zines and shorter books over oatmeal and coffee before work, more typical.

Heroes:

Gentle folks just trying to get through the day living lightly on the planet, animal rights activists, people who demolish SUV sales lots, Henry Rollins, Amy Ray, John Robbins, Rosa Parks, Margaret Sanger, Clara Barton, Belva Lockwood, Sarah Bernhardt, Teresa Esguerra, Jacqueline Joyce Busk Givens, Victoria Moran, Paul Watzlawick, Henry Miller, Amelia Earhart, Bessie Coleman, Chien-Shiung Wu, Lucy Stone, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Morgan Spurlock, Victoria Williams, Michael Moore, Vic Chesnutt and way way way more!
