My Interests

writing songs, reading, meditating, hiking, exercising, self-demolition generated kindly, playing pool, flirting, crosswordpuzzling, graduateschooling, chess playing, music playing (ukelele and guitar), singing, humbling myself, ennobling myself, traveling to Austin and back, watching football, practicing the dharma (albeit imperfectly), learning Tibetan, Sudoku, etc.

I'd like to meet:

New friends, groupies, roadies, dharma-folk, local musicians and singers to co-create with, other wayward Michener Fellows, artists of all types, fun people, castoffs, do-gooders, do-badders, the tattoed and non-tattoed alike, and Helena Bonham Carter.

Music:

I like most of it all with the exception of newfangled Nashville bullshit which wrangled the soul from that lovely form called Country. A sampling: the Gourds, Manu Chau, Miles, the Pixies, XTC, Leadbelly, Modest Mouse, Elvis Costello, Buck Owens, Mark Farina, Vic Chesnutt, and Hasil Adkins.

Movies:

Anything by the following directors and actors: the Coen Brothers, Almodovar, P.T. Anderson, Wes Anderson, Terrence Mallick, Jim Jarmusch, Steven Soderberg, Jodorosky, Paul Fucking Newman, Marlon Brando, Bobby Deniro, Benecio Del Toro, Scorcese, Helena Bonham Carter, Audrey Tautou, Meryl Streep, Liz Taylor, and too many others to count.

Television:

Best used as a vehicle through which to watch movies, but I'm quite fond of NYPD Blue, Deadwood, Six Feet Under, Mr. Show, da Ali G Show, Insomniac, Trailer Park Boys, and others.

Books:

Anything by Milan Kundera, David Wevill, Leo Tolstoy, Ponlop Rinpoche, Trungpa Rinpoche, Pema Chodron, Reggie Ray, Charles Bernstein, Robert Kelly, Bridget Pegeen Kelley, Galway Kinnell, W.S. Merwin, Michael Ondaatje, Yannis Ritsos, Rilke, Trakl, Charles Wright, Donald Barthelme, Brautigan, Camus, Dostoyevsky, Faulkner, Garcia Marquez, Denis Johnson, James Kelman, Cormac McCarthy, and many others.

Heroes:

Padmasambhava and Hasil Adkins
