In the beginning

I was born on October 8th 1978 to a very surprised 41 year old mother. My childhood was fine but quite solitary. I grew up in the beautiful outdoors of the Central Cascades of Washington State. In fact, I still live near there. Unlike a lot of metal heads I didn’t grow up with rock and roll, that would come later. Instead I listened to a lot of classical music from the more intense composers such as Richard Wagner. If it wasn’t for that background my musical tastes would be a lot different. Like so many people I eventually started listening to pop at the time of New Kids on the Block and Michael Jackson. I still remember a lot of the releases of big 80’s pop tunes from people like Madonna, Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, etc. I still don’t remember why but one day I quit all of that and went back to my classical roots. Through listening to tons of NPR I discovered New Age and Gaelic music. That was all I listened to until my early teens.

The Next Beginning

I was away at a youth conference with the Order of DeMolay when I discovered techno. The first tune that got me into it was Dominator by Human Resource. From there I really started to search for a new identity. I was just done with puberty, discovering girls and life was changing. I went from techno into a brief foray into rap at the time Coolio and Snoop Dog were just hitting the scene. Rap only lasted for about six months for me and I slid into grunge… again it didn’t last very long. Kurt Cobain had just killed himself and the music scene was in decline at that time. At that same time I was involved with a woman that used me and really fucked with my mind. To this day I am not the same person… She got inside my head and twisted things pretty bad, it is amazing one woman can do that to you. None the less because of her, I ended up with my first metal album… Persistence in Time by Anthrax. The first metal album I got on cd was Black by Metallica… but somewhere in between I got a copy of Soul of a New Machine by Fear Factory.

The New Beginning

The music of Fear Factory was the most impressive, brutal thing I had ever heard. It really embraced everything I felt at the time, the anger, the pain. I got into other acts then, this would have been 1994 and 1995, like Prong, Napalm Death, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Slayer, Venom and so many others. To say I was hooked would be an understatement. Through metal I rediscovered myself and established the person I am today. However, for a time I didn’t listen to a lot of new music… I just stuck with what I knew in the past. A concert changed that for me. Puddle of Mudd, Deftones, and Godsmack in 2002. My ex-wife was pregnant with my first daughter… making that her first concert, in utero. When I got home from that concert I just couldn’t get anything hard enough, that is when I got into nu-metal. I started listening to groups like Mudvayne and Disturbed then. Most importantly it really opened my eyes to new forms of metal. The birth of my second daughter came and went but things were straining a bit with my wife and I. In September 2005 we decided to separate. Excluding a relationship with a wonderful German girl that ended on the 4th of July… I have been single since. During the time of depression that comes from having your life torn in two I finally dedicated myself to the only love of my life that has never left me, music and here I am.

I hop from thing to thing a lot. I do like to sit down to a good video game, and as I said before music is a huge part of my life. Often I just like to sit and relax and read or just to think.
