I'D LIKE TO MEET CROP CIRCLE MAKERS:
Movies:
men with guns, maria guardado testimony, gnight and good luck, sky high, paprika, awakening dream, only the beginning of space odyssey: 2001, Amoxtli San Ce Tojuan: We are One -- Nosotros Somos Uno, birth of a nation(1915), devil's miner, rosa blanca
Television:
It was around 2005 if not before that i decided to TURN THE TELEVISION OFF!!! After realizing that no matter what i watched on TV, it would just upset me, up to the point that I would throw things at it, especially at stupid racist news anchors, i simply walked away from it and have found myself with a more productive, creative and healthy life.
I don't wach TV. I really dont miss it. Same for hollywood movies. It tends to be crap and superficial, so i dont waste my money supporting a sexist patriarchal industry that lacks color.
But that is not to say that i dont like movies, I love films. While in college i was surrounded by over 9000 video tapes and over 3000 dvds. Short films, anime, sci-fi, horror, kung-fu, documentaries, you name it, if theres a story to be told, ill watch and appreciate.
Books:
i like to read blogs, newspapers, bbc, plays and clever stories. some books i recommend are eva luna by isabel allenda. author, toni morrison. dante's inferno. the globalization reader, maya angelou, che, marcus garvey, paulo coelho, if you havent read the alchemist, youve been missing out. gloria anzaldua, cherri moraga, ana castillo. other books u should pick up ... 1984 and animal farm. ANYTHING neruda. mmm, poetry. i LOVE neruda. some lorca, along with gabriel garcia marquez.(funny the way people come into your life) and for any chapines searching for some inspiration, check out ASTURIAS..read hombres de maiz, or anything else by him, chapino nobel prize laureate right there !!! piri thomas is a puerto rican poet/writer. u must read the Autobiography of Malcolm X, no ifs and or buts about that.
Heroes:
my mother - for being the hardest working woman i know. raising 4 girls, transnationally, single handedly ! came to the states at 24 to find a better future for herself and her daughters. an economic refugee, she made it to the states after her first attempt. knew fuckin no one, but survived. she worked in downtown L.A. for several years in the beginning. Once, she was working at a factory, and her sewing machine broke down. they sent her home and told her to check in the next day to see if the mechanic had fixed it. she called the next day and it still wasnt fixed. she took the day off and walked the streets of L.A. she bumped into a co-worker who told her there was raid that morning. Officers showed up, hand cuffing everyone that didnt jump out the window, and couldn't run fast enough to escape deportation. that was the end of the fashion district for my mom. she had been saved, she was going to stay. it was meant to be.
