HERE'S WHAT RECORD OF THE DAY SAID.
We say A five-piece from the South East, The Ryes were runners-up in the O2 Undiscovered contest and won Virgin Radio's 'Face Off' competition 10 weeks in a row. Fresh from touring around the country (including dates at the O2 Wireless festival and a support slot with Ben's Brother) this was one of the first songs they laid down for an album, which is currently being recorded with Jay Reynolds (Just Jack) and will be ready in next year. Given widespread tolerance for XTC/Sparks-influenced bands on the radio at the moment, the timing appears to be right for them. We like this a lot - everything about this points towards something that could stick at radio. JF London gig: December 10, Scala N1 (w/ Ben's Brother)
The Ryes
With a noise that could already fill stadiums and songs bursting with more ideas than most musicians hope for in a lifetime, The Ryes sound like a band already at the top of their game!
Like all the other best bands, their music refuses to be catagorised. Their songs veer from riff-driven rock to full-blown pop, off for a brief foray into ska territory and back again to rock within the space of a chorus. Paul Cannings vocals range from Justin Hawkins to Neil Hannon touching all bases in between.
Positivity seems to run through everything the Ryes touch, and in their songs you will witness an enormous respect for a very English melodic song writing tradition thats never forgotten the importance of hooks and choruses.
Although the final Ryes line-up only came together relatively recently, the depth of songs come from the songwriters long association. Daniel Williams - (pianist and main songwriter), has been writing for years with his laidback singing partner, Paul Canning. At 23, Daniel signed a publishing deal to the legendary Dick Leahy but after a productive two years moved on to follow his passion for guitar based music.
Dan and Paul then happened upon James Singer, an exceptional guitarist, with a distinct lust for the party life. After meeting the incredible drummer and percussionist Mark Pusey, the final piece was bass player Dave Troke who quietly has brought his own style to The Ryes.
With influences ranging from The Beatles to The Foo Fighters, there's no wonder that James' touch of Hendrix, and Marks creative Copelandesque drive brings together an eclectic mix which is hard to classify. While theyre big fans of the modern music scene, Oasis, Coldplay, Kaisers, KT Tunstall, the band after lengthy discussion would like to settle on the bastard son of Revolver, and the Polices Synchronicity II.
Behind all of this lies a simple philosophy: having fun. The Ryes themselves are lovable rogues, always up for a laugh.
Were rebellious to the point of not getting arrested, says J.J Singer. Well who wants to get caught! replies Dan.
