Sweet Voice
Joe Rybicki was born sometime in the late 1980s, in a town somewhere near Manchester. A chance encounter with a banjo and a scratched Meat Loaf LP led to him being forever enchanted with music. His mother brought home discarded library books for him to read, and he did.
Joe sometimes performs solo, and sometimes with My Wife, a somewhat fluid line-up of local musicians, groupies and hangers-on and has built up a reputation for his entertaining live performances, appearing on bills with such acts as The Holloways, Babyshambles, John Otway, The View, Littl'ans, Duels and The Indelicates.
Joe Rybicki's debut single 'Girl No Trouble' is due for release in Summer 2007.
"I shall begin with a sample lyric:
‘It’s not backing down to take it lying down. It’s not backing down, as long as it gets it off the ground.’
From this snippet I can infer that Joe writes his music discontented and alone in a pigsty bedroom. His frustration lies sexually, and he isn’t afraid to wash his dirty linen in public. On the contrary, he openly laughs at the awkward situations he finds himself embroiled in, and for that he must be congratulated. His audience can relate to gawkish tales of teenage fumbling, and his audience will grow. There weren’t many in attendance for his set tonight, but those who did were certainly intrigued by this boyish love/lust lamenter: a storyteller with a twist.
“Any art students in here?” he asked hopingly, before constructing a performance built upon acoustic guitar and various friend-based additives. This included his Dad on banjo, a brief injection of drums, and an equally gangling looking pal-borrowed-pair of guitarist and bass, respectively.
It is often difficult to execute this laid-back attitude, especially when playing to paying pub crowds, but the Doghouse provides a perfect atmosphere for Joe and his nookie-starved desperados’ impromptus take on pubescent Blake-ish musings, underpinned by Libertines inspired clatter.
An excellent half-hour of Halifax bred youth Culture. Note the big C, funboys."
