About Me

sruli recht makes a mess
and garments
and fills the fractures in between
with that noise in his head
those broken ideas and malnourished moments of his scrambled mind have been documented somewhere around here - srulirecht.com
...small excerpts from interview with his eyes, whilst watching his hands. oct 2005
"as a kid I used to pull apart things to see how they worked, and then put them back together. now I seem to do it with people.
My brain is a strange place to be. Sometimes it works. Other times it works. It all pretty much starts there...
my own blood gets on everything I make - one day auctioneers may gene test my work for authentication
I often stand so close to paintings to look at the brush strokes that I am warned by security.
I find myself in conversations where my compliment of highly disparate and slightly relevant trivia enters the spotlight.
I like to use other peoples perceptions of clothing to fit in or bypass their defenses... like a spy.
yes, minor keys
Water seems to get all over me whenever it's near. I like to sneak. Sneaking past water has never proved fruitful. It gets me every time. Ice though seems nonplused by my presence. it gets on everything.
I think I was born broken."

My Interests

Scissors, pretending to fit in, self destructive work loads, thinking when I should be sleeping, sneaking,
the sound of blades sliding, uncut leather skins, old woollen military uniforms, propellers,
fabric, lots and lots of fabric, old natural fabric, food, being thoroughly stunned by my matrix speed reflexes,
arid humour, brown, deluding myself that I might one day be able to sit still and do less than four things at a time... and maybe even nothing at all,
trying to eat with grace and failing miserably, repetition in form, matte surfaces, cooking things that aren't quite Japanese, robots, ostrich leather,
old and new medical equipment, wit, hardware stores, knowing the sound and rhythm of someone's walk, green, reading when I should be sleeping,
innovation, delicate structures, keeping Frost together, caffeine, texture, facial hair, the profile of layer slices, running on stairs,
smiling at strangers when they least expect it, jelly fish, squids and rays, being loud, the cold, buttons, getting away with it,
working out how they did it, eating with gusto, art that appears factory made, self imposed aphasia, being very quite, shirts buttoned up, patterns and association, scarves, selective appropriation [takin' otha peoples stuff], poker faces, being constantly engaged, undoing knots - especially the really tiny ones in thread, seeing animals and faces in things, becoming entranced with the way people move, nazi era technology, 40's and 50's view of the future, the sternomastoid, finding my other halves, cutting things.

Anything soviet
