Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, trumpeter Jackie Coleman began her love for music as a member of the 2000 All-State Jazz Band under the direction of Dominic Spera. From there, she attended Indiana University where she studied under the direction of David Baker, Pat Harbison, Joey Tartell, Edmund Cord, John Rommel, and Luke Gillespie.
In the past, she has participated in the 2004 Disney Collegiate All-Star band and the 2005 IAJE Sisters in Jazz where she had the opportunity to play at the Pori Jazz Festival in Finland, the Molde Jazz Festival in Norway, and at the Kennedy Center’s Mary Lou Williams Jazz Festival in D.C.
In 2005 she moved to Los Angeles, California to attend the University of Southern California where she studied under Boyde Hoode, Shelton Berg, and Kim Richmond. At this time she had the opportunity to play in the Bill Watrous Wildlife Refugee Big Band, Anne Patterson’s Maiden Voyage, and other groups that were led by her. In 2007 she received her Masters in Music degree from the University of Southern California, and from 2005-2008 when she wasn’t playing in the Los Angeles Area, she had the opportunity to play out at sea for Carnival and Princess Cruise Lines.
