The NFL season runs from September through February, but now there is something new and exciting for all sports and football fans: the Arena Football League. (AFL) Just like watching the Philadelphia Eagles, but now in-doors and on a shorter field (half of a regular football field), the Arena Football League is a fun and friendly environment that focuses on the enjoyable and interaction in the game; from charity events, dance teams, and autograph signings after the game.
The league
recently signed a long-term deal
with ESPN and ABC to play 18
arena football games
on national television -
which helps expand
the league and its
popularity immensely.
The AFL currently has
17 teams including
the Philadelphia Soul
who play at the
Wachovia Center
(home of the
Philadelphia 76ers
and Flyers).
Rocker Jon Bon Jovi
is the majority owner
and former
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback
Ron Jaworski is also a minority
owner and president of the Soul.
Not only do they have an all-star
cast in the front office, but the
team includes great offensive
leaders and defensive players.
Quarterback Tony Graziani is
the highest paid-player in the
AFL in his 7th year in the league,
and recently named AFL offensive
player of the month.
This
year, Graziani reunites with his
former teammate from his days
with the Los Angeles Avengers,
wide-receiver Chris Jackson.
Jackson was a free agent in the
off-season this year that had an
outstanding year with
the Georgia Force.
Together the dynamic
duo has combined for
300 yards and 10
touchdowns. With a
great defense lead by
defensive back Mike
Brown and Gabe
Nyehuis, the Soul
already look like
favorites to represent
the Eastern
Conference for the
Arena Bowl XXII (the
AFL version of the
Superbowl.) which
takes place in New
Orleans on July 27th.
The Philadelphia Soul are
currently 7-0 about
ahlfway through the season.
Although QB
Graziani is out now with a
MCL sprain, the team
continues to band together,
expecting nothing less
than a championship in
the 5th anniversary of
this franchise. So the
question asked is, can the
Soul finally bring a championship
to Philadelphia,
if the Eagles, Flyers,
Sixers, and Phillies cannot
do it? "We expect to win
every game," announces
Graziani, "We will put up a lot of
points and get a lot of [defensive]
stops. We expect a lot of
blowouts."
"I'm not in the predictions business,"
team president Ron
Jaworski said, "but I feel we're
very, very close to a championship."

Ohio product, "We are the Fury" has lived a musician's dream. They recently finished a tour with
one of their favorite
bands in support of their current
record. "Venus", is the follow
up to their 2006 EP, "Infinite
Jest", which is actually a rerelease
of their 2005 EP, "As the
Fury." Both were released on
Warner subsidiary One Big
Spark Records. "We actually
recorded it almost two years
ago. It took a while to get our
label to put it out there," says
singer Jeremy Lublin. "It's our
baby. It's kind of like a glam,
classic rock feel to it. It was to
make a sound very influenced
by the bands we look up to."
"We are the Fury" began in a
Toledo high school in 1999. "We
started playing together in high
school in various bands. We
realized we wanted to do this
about 4 years ago and we've
been doing this ever since."
Since their conception, WATF
have endured 3 named changes,
slit writs, pseudo-muggings, losing
their keyboard player, who
has since been replaced by
Brady Lefflar, and New Jersey
arrest warrant on their way to a
dream tour. Though their current
tour is just getting underway,
these guys are no strangers
to the road. WATF has crossed
the country, from Seattle to
New York City, with bands like,
"Jack's Mannequin", "Head
Automatica", and "Silverchair".
Not to mention a stint on the
Vans Warped Tour and dates at
Bamboozle, South By
Southwest, and CMJ
Independent Music Festival.
According to Lublin, breaking
out of Toledo is a feat in it's self.
"The Toledo scene has had its
ups and downs over the past
few years. There's never been a
band to really break out of
there so it's pretty localized."
That being said WATF is not
resting on their laurels. They are
currently taking time to write
"your favorite record." They are
shooting for a release date in
early 2009.Top 30 Songs - Week of May 19, 2008
