About Me

What The Hell Is Horrorcore? To put it simply, Horrorcore is a form of rap music with horror elements. If you take rap music and a horror movie plot in a blender, horrorcore would come out. You could say that Horrorcore is the rap equivalent of Death Metal. It has had many names over the years, The Wicked Shit, Acid Rap, Death Rap, Psycho Style, The Siccness, The Terrifying Style and of course Horrorcore. The term "Horrorcore" was first used by Russell Simmons of the Def Jam fame in 1994 to describe own horrorcore group, The Flatlinerz, but the form of music was around years before that. There is a huge debate as to who exactly started the genre, but if you look at it, no one individual did. It was all different rappers in different regions who were inspired by horror movies or horrorific real life situations. Here are some of the artists and groups that got the style out there and started in different regions of the United States.Esham and his group NATAS were the first to do the style in Michigan, calling it Acid Rap and The Wicked Shit. Esham put out his first album in 1990. He was by far the biggest inspiration for the horrorcore market, for a while if you were a Michigan rapper, you had to do horror rap, that was the Detroit style. He influenced such mainstream artists as Eminem, Kid Rock and a gang of underground artists in Michigan (such as House of Krazees, UNLV, KGP, Bedlam, HaLFBrEEd, Simken Heights, Two Sins, V Sinizter, etc)Insane Poetry was by far the earliest pure horror rapper (there were other rappers pre-dating him who just dabbled in the subject every now and then). Releasing their first EP exclusively on vinyl in 1988 (and a long forgotten single before that in 1987).Brotha Lynch Hung was one of the biggest influences in the horror rap style on the West Coast. Brotha Lynch Hung blended horror elements and the west coast g funk sound to make a new style all his own, The Siccness. Brotha Lynch released his first album with fellow rapper Sicx "Nigga Deep" in 1992, but is most known for his solo album "Season of Da Siccness" from 1994.In the south Ganksta NIP was showing off his "Psycho Style." Ganksta NIP is most notably known for his ghost writing for southern rap sensations The Geto Boys. NIP released his first solo "The South Park Psycho" in 1992.Also in the South, before they became successful, DJ Paul & Juicy J of Three 6 Mafia were producing creepy Satanic styled music on their underground mixtapes (featuring local Memphis rappers/friends of theirs. The best of their mixtape crew would go on to make up the Three 6 Mafia). They put out their first mixtape "Vol. 1 (Da Exorcist)" in 1991.As for the east coast, it took a little longer. The Flatlinerz released their first and only album "USA" (Under Satan's Authority) in 1994 on Def Jam Records. The Flatlinerz didn't get much recognition or sell very many units, for all intensive purposes the album bombed.Another better known horror group out of the East are the Gravediggaz. They released their first album "Niggamortis" (Known as "Six Feet Deep" in the US) in 1997. The album received rave reviews, and not surprisingly with members like The RZA (of Wu Tang Clan), Prince Paul (of De La Soul), Frukwan (of Stetsasonic) and Too Poetic. Although sadly, after their first album they would stray away from the horrorcore sound for a more hip hop style, but "Niggamortis" remains a classic in the horrorcore world. These artists, and many more, would go on to inspire the Horrorcore Rappers of today.
