Some may say, “…She doesn’t sound like a gospel singer.†They would be correct. Lo Carter does not sing gospel music in the traditional sense. When you listen to her music, you probably won’t hear her “growl†like some of the other gospel and soul singers of the past--and today. And no, she usually doesn’t tackle a song with a bevy of acrobatic runs to express emotion in her music. If you ask her, she’ll probably say, “That’s just not my style of singingâ€. But there is no doubt that Lo Carter has been chosen to share her musical testimony of life with the world. And, she’s been gifted with the capability to do just that. Singing in the church at an early age; she recalls being intrigued and wondering, “What in the world are they moaning about? …I couldn’t understand what they were saying, but I loved the strange harmonies and the passion I felt as they were—to me—crying out…As I grew older and more familiar with the English language, I understood the words and my favorite hymn, A Charge to Keep I Have , would go on to reflect the purpose on my life.â€
One listen to I Don’t Wanna Love You or Let Go and you can hear the passion and southern soul influence permeate the speakers. Lo has a tendency to write and sing about love and life experiences in a way any demographic can appreciate. So, whether it’s pop, rock, Christian contemporary, or R&B/Soul, Lo puts her pen to pad and lets the words and melodies come from deep within. “It’s all Soul music…†she says with a smile; “…it’s just told in different ways.†If you listen, there’s a sense of who she really is. Her lyrics exude a playful maturity that any age group can relate to and a sensuality and confidence that any man or woman can identify with. “Whether they are dancing to the music or just meditating on the words, I want people to move when they hear my songs...†she says. “I write to motivate a positive response and encourage productive discussion. I want to get the juices pumping deep inside so you can’t help but move.†And, that’s exactly what people do when they listen to the songs she plays for them. “I love performing Suga for people. It’s cool to see their feet start tapping, fingers start snapping…their bodies start moving from side to side. That’s when I know I’ve done my job as a writer and performer.â€
