"I made the same amount of money each night playing in Austin clubs in 1966 as I did in 2006. But in 1966, one night of work paid my rent."

The Year of Austin Music is a not-for-profitorganization that promotes Austin music and its relationship with our musicians, audiences and local business community.
Our immediate goal is:
to have every Austinite go see one Austin band play each month of 2008.
In 2008 we will launch a public awareness campaign to promote our goal and to increase the relationship between Austin music and Austin’s business community. By partnering with each other it will further the reach of both to Austin’s booming population.
Austin is the self-proclaimed “Live Music Capital of the Worldâ€, but did you know:
- Audiences at local music venues have decreased by 60-70%% in the last 15 years while Austin’s size has more than doubled?
- The rate of performance pay for an Austin musician is less now than it was in 1987?
- Most Austin musicians do not make their living playing music and often pay to do each performance after promotion and other expenses are tallied?
- The number of Austin music venues has steadily dropped in the last 10 years and that 6th street has fewer than 10 live music venues?
With your help, The Year of Austin Music will help Austin regain the vibrant music scene that made it “The Live Music Capital of the Worldâ€.
