As a youth, I was a nationally ranked chess player. I had a coach I reported to weekly and traveled to play in tournaments across the US. In chess, as in life, believing you are invincible leads to humbling experiences where your shortcomings are exposed before your very eyes. Remember, even Napoleon, with the strongest army the world had ever seen, couldn't resist marching into Russia...When I battle a master the odds are against me. But I don't mind being the underdog...This year I'm working to refine my game and raise my ranking to the title of National Expert. Metro High Chess Coach Bill Moushey- A hero in my life that will never be forgotten. Every bit as eloquent as he was eccentric, he was the catalyst behind Metro High winning the State Championship in 1999 and our Top 5 finish at the National K-12 Championships in 2000. Before the final round of the State Championship, he told me that he believed in me and my ability, as he did before most of the bigger matches. This trust of confidence motivated me to elevate my game and play with a higher level of intensity, transforming me from a decent player into a state championship-caliber player. I'll never forget that year, and will always honor the man who made a significant impact on my life... R.I.P.
