The average visitor at the Grand Canyon spends 2 hours there. Simply tragic.

About Me

The only thing harder than starting over is starting under.During this period of personal growth and improvement I find myself in, I've taken to collecting reflections and quotes that help me in my journey. Here's one I've been thinking on lately:"We have a fear of facing ourselves. That is the obstacle. Experiencing the innermost core of our existence is very embarrassing to a lot of people. A lot of people turn to something that they hope will liberate them without their having to face themselves. That is impossible. We can't do that. We have to be honest with ourselves. We have to see our gut, our darkest moments, our most undesirable parts. We have to see them...whatever is there, we have to face it." --Chogyam Trungpa

My Interests

RIGHT NOW: rowing...if i turn out to be any good at it, cycling will have a rival in my life,Here's a little footage of me rowing with the Lions Rowing Club. I'm in the 7 seat (in purple shirt and orange hat).be longing, learning, brain games, music (playing trumpet, guitar, piano, percussion--anything i can get my hands on), DJing, american apparel, rock climbing, cycling, backpacking, camping, skiing, sailing, surfing, hiking, movies, animal rights, reading, photography, there's a place in muir woods where the redwoods stop and the ocean starts, the golden gate bridge is perfect for going on a not-bike ride, loving the people i work with, the pieces of chicago i find in nyc and sf, having conversations that are less like a chat and more like a journey, smarter than the tricks played on your heart...we'll look at em together then we'll take em apart.

I'd like to meet:

myself in the darkest light and still be able to recognize her by sight. and if the recognition didn't come, then i'd like to be able to sit way down and listen to her speak until it did. she wouldn't need to remind me of where i've been or what i've done because i never forget (i never forget--not ever, not yet), but she would still speak and i would still hear and so the next time we were to meet there, i'd pull up and park to stay awhile in that very lightest dark.

Music:

Right now: Arianne Lee, Sachal Vasandani, Robin Thicke, Mat Kearney, Erik Scott Smith, Plain White T's, The Duhks, Damon Castillo Band, Paula McMath, Kris Delmhorst, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Snow Patrol, The Fray, Ken Oak Band (go cello rock), Jacob, Jessica Porter...Scratch Track (dirrty), Lori McKenna, Counting Crows, Stephanie Marquis, Lily Wilson, Missy Higgins, Joe Purdy, Scissor Sisters, Damien Rice, Amos Lee, Dispatch, Indigo Girls, www.pandora.com

Movies:

i love movies! all time: chantilly lace, dead poet's society, indian summer, any christopher guest, anything with parker posey in it. right now: march of the penguins, anchorman, born into brothels...and joni's soon to be blockbuster...just saw: the pursuit of happyness, babel

Television:

dont watch it a lot...but anything jimmie taylor selects for me is usually a winner.

Books:

i love books too--way more than movies.JUST FINISHED: The Time Traveler's Wife (Niffenegger), which was wrenching and lovely...on an almost mystical or spirtual level.of course, there's EAT PRAY LOVE by Elizabeth Gilbert, one of (if not THE) most important books i've read. i read it less like i'm passing the time and more like i'm studying a religious text. technically, i'm always currently reading it.also, The Year of Magical Thinking (Didion), which i also think is important in a whole different way.NEXT UP: Wisdom of No Escape, The Snow Leopard, The Alchemist, and Replay.ALL TIME: EAT PRAY LOVE (new but powerful addition, obviously), bird by bird (lamott) anything kingsolver, no more prisons (upski wimsatt), into thin air (krakauer), i know this much is true (lamb).

Heroes:

i admire a lot of people...my parents--totally humbled by the sacrifices they have made to raise 4 good kids...oscar romero and martin luther king jr for the obvious reasons...thich nhat hanh--peace is a powerful thing, man.
