THE ALBANIAN PEOPLE: A HISTORICAL CONTEXT
By Ermira Babamusta

Scholars believe that the Albanian people are the oldest inhabitants in Southeastern Europe, claiming to be the direct descendants from the ancient kingdom of Illyria (1270-167 BC), speaking the language of Illyrians that survived over 3000 years, despite the Greek colonies (from 8c to 6c BC), Roman Occupation (167 BC – AD 395), The Byzantine Empire (395 AD to 565 AD), Ottoman Empire Rule (1299 to 1922) and subsequent invasions until mid-twentieth century.[3] The Illyrian civilization dates back to the Bronze Age, inhabiting western part of the Balkan Peninsula around 1000 BC. Evidence points to conclusions leading to direct relationship between the Illyrians and Albanians. This relationship is illustrated in the reference to the Illyrian words used for people-names, names of places. Remarkably, the Illyrian words have survived more than 3,000 years, and are still in use today in modern Albanian language. READ MORE
