Kirstens music reflects a life filled with diverse influences and an ability to hear music in everyday life. Growing up in a family in the Midwest that constantly encouraged her artistic development, Kirsten began to experiment with creating her own music at age four. After receiving her first guitar from her mother at age seven, she began to expand her musical scope by honing her skill with formal lessons in saxophone and classical guitar. She went on to add violin and drums to her musical repertoire. Her music reflects the broad influences of the self-taught and classically trained; her compositions exhibit the extensive range of her talents.
Kirsten remembers being dropped off at her first live performances by her mother, minivan loaded high with her equipment. Her stage presence indicates an extreme comfort and familiarity with the stage. Her early shows ranged from gigs with jazz and blues bands, to rock and punk, till finally finding her place as a solo folk artist.
Determining new perspective was needed before she began to write new material and record her album; her travels brought her to Greensboro, North Carolina. With her first solo album, Constitution, completed and already in distribution, Kirsten continues to write and compose.
Constitution is the culmination of a maturing artist; all instrumentation and vocals were preformed by her. The vocal harmonies, as well as her eclectic choices for percussion, create a new direction in modern folk music. Her diverse background allows her to create a sound that both acknowledges the greats of the past, while at the same time moves folk music in a new direction.
