1met•al: raw, energetic, and highly amplified electronic rock music having a hard beatBeing original is something most bands today strive for. With the popularity of bands like System of a Down and Nirvana, which jumped into the public’s eye each with its own intriguing new styles, almost every new band on the scene today is searching for ways to break new and unheard ground.
On the other side of the spectrum, some bands live by the philosophy “If it ain't broke, don’t fix it†and continue to play the style of music that’s been embedded deep into the foundation of metal by such infamous artists as Led Zeppelin, Megadeth, Black Sabbath, Pantera, and Metallica.
Then there is LIMINAL: a band so original and yet so familiar. It sounds like everything and it sounds like nothing. An endless network of influences drives this band to the ends of its creations, only to be rounded out by their ambition to be different. In every aspect, its members work to achieve the sounds of thousands of metal artists before them and still maintain the ability to build their own unique styles upon them.
Formed in 2004, LIMINAL came together with the idea to play original music their way. Taking a melodic rock style and putting a rough metal edge to it, the band recorded its first 5 song demo in July 2004. The CD’s overall response was not overwhelming, but it did act as a stepping stone for bringing LIMINAL into the NJ local scene. Finding a style they felt could built on, the band members immediately jumped back into writing songs for their planned first full-length album.
LIMINAL took the next few months to perfect, finalize, and record their new material, and in July of 2005, exactly one year after the release of the band’s first demo, they released their first full -ength CD, “These Poor Remains.†The CD was a step forward, and the songs, though maintaining the early style, matured and took on an even more original sound. Tracks such as “Payment for Yesterdays†and “Darkening Skies†showed how hard-hitting and aggressive the band could be, while others like “Eye for an I†and “Enchained†displayed the band’s skill for melody. All around, it was definitely the representation LIMINAL wanted to exhibit their originality.
“These Poor Remains†was well received and opened up several doors for LIMINAL. An abundance of shows flooded its way, allowing the band many opportunities to showcase its original style and generating many opportunities for radio airplay. Throughout the end of the 2005 year, LIMINAL spent many nights on stage performing their songs with a live show that has intrigued many audiences. There is rarely a show that LIMINAL walks away from when someone has not come up to one of its members and claimed that they have never heard anything like them before. And that is something LIMINAL takes great pride in.
Throughout the course of Spring/Summer 2006, LIMINAL continued to play out live. All the while, back in the studio the members of the band were constantly working on new material that only further stretched the bounds of their creativity; material that can only, when searching for a word, be labeled as Experi~Metal, a term coined by the band itself. With each member bringing new, dissimilar songs and lyrics to the table, the range of music styles is endless. Each new song that LIMINAL writes comes together with multitudinous influences and ideas and is painfully worked and recreated until it perfectly forms into an exceptional, inventive, and ingenious score of music that could be inspiring to new musicians looking to branch out into uncharted territory.
With the band working on a December ‘06 release for its second planned album, titled “None but Fools & Madmen,†its members are left to contemplate many questions. What plans and fortunes lie ahead in wait for the members of this innovative band? Can this band continue to create such original and inventive music? And, if so, for how long? Well, right now one thing is sure for this dynamic quartet…they enjoy being themselves and playing their music. To John, Jimi, Carla, and Jay there is only one: LIMINAL.
