Chris Crystal A conscious soul is what one must possess; this helps us to reveal to the world our true intentions. Chris Crystal has a soul that has an undying love for conscious music and as such has dedicated his being to providing the world with conscious uplifting music. Born on February 24th, 1973 at the University Hospital of the West Indies, Christopher Forbes had been given the gift of music through the bloodline of his father, well-known bass player Rupert Forbes (pass on); who used to play bass in the band “Food, Clothes and Shelter- recorded and harmonized with Jah D. His mother, Cathleen “Dawn” Thompson, (who now resides in Atlanta with his other siblings), along with his father has always provided the warmth and comfort of a loving family (two brothers and three sister by his mother’s side) and with teachings of Rastafari has never left their paths. Chris Crystal attended the New Day Primary School and after New Day he went straight to “Street College”. He started to develop on his initiative and learnt from the different experiences life had to offer him at all points in time. At the time of leaving primary school, he had moved to live with his mother at Red Hills Road and then they later moved to Maxfield where they eventually lived. While living in Maxfield, he sought to do something for himself and ease the pressure from mommy. He began working at a hardware and tried to learn how to drive a forklift, and then from there he began working at PetroJam then Mohawk Equipment where at both places he was employed as a forklift driver. But he always sings and singing never came to him as a job, it was in his genes. It was not until he met a young girl and she bought him a keyboard before he did a little recording. This however was put on pause as Jah had issued him a calling that had to be answered, as a result he had to take some time to ‘ovastand the calling’ of the King. During this time he always remembered his music but kept on building in different aspects of his life and knew that this was the time for his next level of maturity. “The creator said I can walk, so I trod Bobo Hill, which helped to build the warrior within, and I am also a part of the Nazarene. This help to cultivate who I am today. Whole heap a joy, cause my calling was spiritual, I couldn’t quite explain it, but when daddy pass on it was my time to hold the baton, I felt like I was given a part of his strength.” As time passed he began working for a company called Jadan International, it is an import/export business, where he now drives a truck. With Chris Crystal, music has always been within, but the question is, what caused it to surface? He knows that most of his true self comes through pain: intimate relationships, the pain of expressing himself to himself and even taking himself seriously. But all in all he now sees beauty through pain and this has allowed him to be determined through the different pains to project his musical vibe to the universe. As a man, Chris Crystal has great respect for his father and his music, he give thanks to his father as he now has a divine love for the bass line, making rhythms with such flow and creativity but gives much praises to the Creator for the life lessons of full expression. He not only gets or draws inspiration from his father but great musicians and engineers such as Garnett Silk, Jah Selah, Jah D and Diavallan (Music Addict) respectively, with the latter father and son helping him to build rhythms for him beautiful music. All of whom he says makes him what he is today. With songs like ‘Got to be with you’- recorded, harmonized and track built by Diavallan Fearon, ‘Fourteen Days’, which he voiced for Baby Lion; ‘Tell her for Me’, ‘Man Hardcore Warrior’, ‘Rob no one’, ‘Rude Bwoy’, ‘I never Know’-recorded by Jah D. He also has a barrage of unfinished songs (some which he has recorded at home)- love songs especially, as he finds great pleasure in singing love songs more, he has culture songs also but still loves to sing love songs because ‘Chris Crystal is a loving person.’ He has not performed much but from the little that he has done it has been a wonderful experience. He has performed at a stage show put on by Baby Lion (who he gives great respect to) on Hagley Park Road. He says the opportunity was nice, but kind of nerve racking but sees it at just another hurdle to get over. At that show he did two songs, out of the two it was ‘Fourteen Days’ that got a forward from the crowd. This father of two, a boy and a girl, makes no apologies when he says that his intention is to make music so that somebody can learn from it, especially his children. “Love is a must, so I sing songs that are uplifting to the youth and hold a joy. Whatever I say will go right around the world and come back to my heart.” With that he hopes to one-day reach the level that he can suggest things and they happen. He is a strong believer in humility and always aims to build music that will heal people, heal spirits and go places, with him ‘just keep on stepping up Jacobs ladder’. His aims are simply, to have albums then be a producer with anyone willing to be apart of that reality, ‘work with Dia cause him know the flavor, the art and he is a believer,’ and Chris Crystal himself has a whole lot of faith and believes in his music. This nature lover, joyous, and conscious man is full of youthful vibe, always laughing and creating songs, does not believe in violence but does not like to be violated or taken for a fool because he too can be terrible. An affirmer of truth and a lover of the female gender, Chris Crystal is out to make the world fall in love and fall in love with him. He is now arming himself for tomorrow, and tomorrow will definitely need his love.
