KLASIKOdinni Ayee is the name given at birth to this, a classical young deejay that has his roots firmly planted in the Builders Family soil. ‘Klasik’ is the moniker he now goes by and for those of whom he has associated himself with musically is very far-reaching and influential to his career. Klasik is one of the rare gems produced by the refuge of the ghetto, born on the 19th of November in 1983, he only knows Lady Huggins Avenue as his only home, where he has lived with his extended family since birth. Growing up, he attended Shortwood Practicing School after which he attended the Dunoon High School where he thoroughly enjoyed his high school years. After high school, he went on to do some CXC subjects at The Institute of Academic Excellence (IAE). As for work he has done a little plumbing and tiling here and there. He is currently doing video editing at Media Crown College. This ambitious young man takes his music very seriously; he says that it was since primary school with the ‘beating of the desk tops as drums’ has guided him to this day. It was after high school that his cousin asked him what is it that he was going to do now that he has finished high school and Klasik’s reply was “mi seh a deejay straight…no joke.” From the days of Shortwood Practicing School, his musical icons were early identified: Buju Banton, Spragga Benz and Bounty Killa and these veterans are the ones who have helped him to realize his talent until this day. It was, however, his wish to be a dominant force to be reckoned with that led him to conquer “Bottle Thursdays” at Princeville Plaza. This was a deejay competition that his friends encouraged him to enter, as they too knew his potential. That was his first stage show and it was a success as he placed second and even has his trophy to prove it and even got the ‘voice’ on a new rhythm. After this boost, he began to par with Aidonia at Horizon but that was short-lived. Then there came the Supa Hype phase, and then he started to par with Busy Signal from whom he says he has learnt a lot. Supa Hype had like his sound and gave him the opportunity to voice on his “Supernatural” rhythm but unfortunately his song did not get mixed and released citing that this is a very popular obstacle faced by young artistes. Then from there it was home to Builders Music. At Builders Music, Dia who is always available for guidance is now grooming him in the right way. This has provided a great opportunity for him since he loves being in the studio, writing songs and performing. So far, he has done several recordings at Builders Music, these include: The Ghets; Girl, a yuh fi have mi youth and Loose Ball while among his unrecorded lists are: Uttermost Cuttermost; My Head Back; Bwoy a Bite up Himself and Streets are Calling. His plan is to leave out as far as possible the negativity and slackness which seems to be bombarding the new Dancehall Era in Jamaica and this too will give him less working, that is, not too much editing for radio and just keep on putting positive energy into his work. Just by listening to him delivering himself in any format, one can tell that he has been influenced by Spragga Benz, Sizzla, Buju Banton, Bounty Killa, Busy Signal and he says he rates Vybes Kartel as one of the best Lyricist. He also admires producers such as Dia, Don Carleone and Dave Kelly. At the same time, he is bringing a different flavor, his flavor to the genre: ideas, style- simply put, it is ‘hardcore consciousness’ with effectiveness and creativity because “when yuh sing ‘bout reality yuh can guh wrong.” Apart from his performance at ‘Bottle Thursdays’, he has a number of stage show stints to his lists: Heineken Star Time in 2006 when Busy Signal called him on stage and the crowd response was good but Klasik believes that he can do much better and that there is always room for improvement; The Youth for Change Concert at the Grants Pen Peace park and this he says is his most memorable moment to date, he says ‘it was marvelous because I put in nuff energy and got a great response.’ These days he is concentrating on writing and doing some more recordings at Builders Music Studio. The sky is the limit for this young man; his plans range from appearing on BET to going places that some artist never dreamed of. He clearly will be stamping his authority on the business and in his own words “tek Dancehall to the Pinnacle which is consciousness” and of course has to have a multi-platinum album to his name. His attitude is that “it must happen!” and that is just about the right attitude to go with and with that he wishes to contribute back to society and help the youths and work with friends and family and “Builders Music has helped me to work harder towards my goals.” This calm yet assertive young man is determined to nurture his talent until it matures then he will be ready to expose it to the world.
