What type of Mother Hen Are You?

April is Cesarean Awareness Month

What is Cesarean Awareness Month? An internationally recognized month of awareness about the impact of cesarean sections on mothers, babies, and families worldwide. It’s about educating yourself to the pros and cons of major abdominal surgery and the possibilities for healthy birth afterwards as well as educating yourself for prevention of cesarean section.Cesarean awareness is for mothers who are expecting or who might choose to be in the future. It’s for daughters who don’t realize what choices are being taken away from them. It’s for scientists studying the effects of cesareans and how birth impacts our lives. It’s for grandmothers who won’t be having more children but are questioning the abdominal pains and adhesions causing damage 30 years after their cesareans.CESAREANS are serious. There is no need for a ‘catchy phrase’ to tell us that this is a mainstream problem. It affects everyone. One in three American women every year have surgery to bring their babies into the world. These women have lifelong health effects, impacting the families that are helping them in their healing, impacting other families through healthcare costs and policies, and bringing back those same lifelong health effects to the children they bring into this world.Be aware. Read. Learn. Ask questions. Get informed consent. Be your own advocate for the information you need to know. Visit http://www.ican-online.org/Natural Childbirth
Woman have been giving birth since the begining of time.

Birth is a completely natural process. It is not a disease or sickness. Doctors have convinced us that we need them to give birth and it is simply not true.
Birth the way they want it.....

and the way it should be.....

BABY WEARING
The Benefits of Babywearing from the babywearer.com It's also great for your baby:
Babies cry less. Research has shown that babies who are carried cry (on average) 43% less overall and 54% less during the evening hours (1). In cultures where babies are carried almost continuously, babies cry much less than those in non-carrying cultures (2-6).
Good for baby's mental development. Babies spend more time in a "quiet, alert state" when carried - the ideal state for learning. Their senses are stimulated while being carried (yet there is a place to retreat too). When carried, your baby sees the world from where you do, instead of the ceiling above his crib or people's knees from a stroller. And the extra stimulation benefits brain development.
Good for baby's emotional development. Babies are quickly able to develop a sense of security and trust when they are carried. They are more likely to be securely attached to their care-giver/s (7) and often become independent at an earlier age (8).
Good for baby's physical development. By being so close to your body's rhythms, your newborn "gets in rhythm" much more quickly. Your heartbeat, breathing, voice and warmth are all familiar. Research has shown how this helps newborns (especially premature babies) to adapt to life outside the womb (9).
Good for babies whose mums are depressed. Babies who are not held need more verbal interaction and eye contact, just to be reassured that you're there. Carrying your baby is a great way to connect with her (and provide stimulation too) without the "burden" of having to interact (10). Of course your baby is "right there" to enjoy whenever you feel like snuggling, kissing or talking.
It's great for other people who look after your baby: Partners who work away from home, relatives and babysitters all have a ready way of connecting with and soothing your baby when they wear him too!

BREASTFEEDING..
Breastmilk is best for babies. It allows babies to develop to their biological norm. There is no substitute for breastmilk. Human milk contains the right amount of fatty acids and amino acids for brain development and proper digestion. Formula can NOT do this it changes babies gut flora and ph levels. Formula fed babies are more likely to have constipation, diarrhea and leaky gut syndrome. The acidic ph levels mean formula fed babies are more likely to succumb to SIDS. Human milk also offers your child the benefit of your antibodies which are passed during nursing. Breastmilk contains antibodies against viruses and bacterias. Formula feed babies are more likely to be sick during the first year of life because the are denied this wonderful birth right. They are also more likely to suffer from ear infections and contact diabities and more likely to be obese.

there are many benefits to you also, from the trivial cheapness of breastfeeding to the huge decrease in the risk of breast cancer. In the early weeks when you should be taking it easy breastfeeding forces you to sit down kick back relax, and bond with your baby. There is no trips to the store at 1 am, no bottles to wash, no figuring out how long you will be out and packing bags of formula, no horrible smelling poops or colicky babies. Breastfeeding during the first 6 months if done exclusively and during the night is also a highly effective birth control method.AND now for the big one Breastfeeding reduces your chance of breast cancer greatly and the longer you breastfeed the more it reduces your chances. It also has been shown to reduce the rates of other female cancers such as ovarian, uterine and endometrial cancers http://www.breastfeeding.com/all_about/all_about_breast_canc er.html

Books:

This is a great reading list that I stole from Justmommies Natural childbirth board.
“The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth” by Henci Goer - This is a must read for every pregnant woman but espeacially for those who wnat the more "solid information". All the information is referenced at the end of the book with countless studies.
”Birthing from Within”by Pam England - A spiritual look at childbirth. Not one of my favorites but has great reviews from others
“Guide to Childbirth” by Ina May Gaskin - I haven't read this book yet but am dying to I have heard nothing but amazing things about it
"Childbirth Without Fear" by Grantly Dick-Read.
“Husband Coached Childbirth” by Dr. Robert Bradley - .
“Christ Centered Childbirth” by Kelly J. Townsend
“The Labor Progress Handbook” by Penny Simkin
"Natural Chilbirth the Bradley Way" by Susan McCutcheon - This is a great rid I loved all of it but espeacially the nutrition chapter of the book. Again I would say a must read
"The Pregnancy Book" by Dr. Sears - This book is written as a month to month guide much like the What to ex..pect series with one exception, Dr. Sears doesn't sound like a jerk
"The Birth Book" by Dr. Sears
"Having a Baby, naturally" by Mothering Mag.
"Immaculate Deception" by Suzanne Arms
"The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" by LLL Int.
"The Baby Catcher" by Peggy Vincent - This is one of my absolute favorite books. It isn't much of a NCB prep book in the way others are but it is still a must read.
“Spiritual Midwifery” by Ina May Gaskin
"The Politics of Birth" by Sheila Kitzinger -
"The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth"
"The Breastfeeding Book" by Martha Sears
