About Me

Singer and songwriter at the mellower end of the spectrum - I've been in a couple of bands but these days I mostly play on my own, although I am up for collaborations - especially if these take me out of my comfort zone.
"Nicky's songs are perceptive, intelligent & witty. She's a nice guitarist (she also has the smallest guitar I've ever seen) & has an attractive style both of singing & presentation. Truly enchanting." - Helen Ditchburn, Songsmith Promotions

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: I've taken to playing live sets with the mesmerising addition of Richard Riley. When I get a chance, I play with James Slater, Rich Riley and various configurations of the Coalition of the Willing; with Adam Bond, with Martin John, and with Dave Oakley.

Recording credits:
Cinderella and Pandora were recorded at home by Alex Johns.
The River Says Yes REMIX was recorded and made beautiful and mysterious by Richard Riley, then further tinkered with by Alex Johns, with the addition of Tracy Neil Elliss-Brookes on bass.
Influences: It's the writing I go for, so my subliminal influences probably include: Bruce Cockburn, Greg Brown, James Taylor, Emily Dickinson, Joni Mitchell, Tom Paxton, Cole Porter, Bob Dylan, Karen Peris/the Innocence Mission, Over the Rhine, and Mr Wesby and Mrs Johnson from Yeo Moor Junior School who started me writing poetry. I also listened to a lot of Abba when I was about ten, which may have rubbed off, I suppose.....I'm influenced in other ways by the lovely bunch of Bristol folkies I'm lucky enough to know and sometimes play with: particularly Dave Oakley; James Slater; Steve Graham; Rich Riley; Jim Tigwell; The Willbees; Ray Croll; and Mike Scott, the songwriter's songwriter.
Sounds Like: I don't think I'm channelling anyone in particular.....

Getting in touch with my inner rock chick

I'm just coming down with a gig with the Coalition of the Willing.  I think at full stretch there were ten of us playing, and for the first time I did a couple of my songs with the band.  It...
