Band Members: An ill fated venture with a bluegrass trio taught me that I am essentially a solo artist, nobody has been eager to recruit me into their band, and I like the freedom.......and the power.
Influences: Undoubtedly the biggest influence has been Loudon Wainwright III. I met him once and was astonished at how approachable he was, and I hope he has forgotten what an awestruck dickhead I was. I also have just about everything Tom Waits has recorded, there have been numerous other artists that I have stolen little bits of business from, I hope I never become too snotty to learn from the most unlikely sources.
Sounds Like: My big thing at the moment is the sound Joe Strummer got, (I'm very slow to catch on), the Mescalero's stuff is superb, and the Horace X album, Strategy, is on all the time. We have the best music pub in three counties in Bath, The Bell, and they keep coming up with bands I've never heard of before, as well as long term local favourites like Big Fish, The Organelles and Spiro. I like bands that sound like bands, and singers who may not always be in perfect control, but occasionally make my balls spin. With reference to what I sound like, may I at this juncture include a very satisfying review from 'fROOTS' magazine, "MIKE SCOTT...UM..., Bradford on Avon songwriter(not the Waterboy!)follows his quirky (if stark) Irregular release SHEDSONGS with a new set that is more ambitious (in arrangement and production terms) but just as intelligent and unpretentiously idiosyncratic in both content and outlook. At times it is like hearing a Bristolian Loudon Wainwright. Worth the effort." (I didn't write it myself, honest!) On the other hand, at a voice workshop at Wimborne Festival, I was told my voice was 'trapped behind my glasses'. Make of that what you will, but I have changed my optician since.
