It is a terrible thing to love what death can touch

About Me

I prefer to stay indoors with dim lighting, so not surprisingly, my favorite activities are sedentary ones like reading, writing, painting, listening to music, and occasionally (though increasingly rare), lame attempts at playing music of my own. Most of all, I like to fixate on obscure topics or ideas that have hidden or unexpected metaphors, then spend months or years learning, collecting and/or obsessing on everything I can unearth about that particular idea or theme. I rarely connect with people who share my assorted and diverse interests and I've learned to keep most of my ideas to myself. I am a writer stuck in a long-term state of writer's block - though I once had an obnoxious amount of enthusiasm and a fair amount of promise in this realm. Before my self-imposed hiatus from creative expression, I wrote a novel, a few scripts, some magazine pieces, etc. -- with topics ranging from punk rock bands and shows to the creation of the International Criminal Court for war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity. I am interested, inspired and/or entertained by war correspondents, Watergate, Hamlet, 19th century Russian literature, Jon Stewart, early SNL, bioethics, national and international politics, peace treaties, The Simpsons, animals (especially my cats), the U.S. Constitution, Lenny Bruce and Nick Cave (not in that order, and not by any stretch a comprehensive list). I have 3 cats who've kept me alive when I wasn't sure life was worth all the hassle, amazingly talented and interesting siblings, a few much-loved friends, a shitload of difficulties and anxities about whatever lies ahead... Basically I'm lucky though. I've come through dark periods I wouldn't wish on anyone and have somehow survived relatively intact. Considering the alternatives, things could be much worse.

My Interests

Watergate; politics; war crimes tribunals/ICC; Hamlet; music; reading the entire Sunday New York Times (except the business and finance sections); having time to read a novel in one sitting; writing; dark, crashing thunder storms when I don't have to leave the house; drinking coffee; smoking cigs; Oscar, Luigi and Isabelle (my cats). I don't like telephones; unanswered mail; guilt; cruelty; prejudice; ignorance; pettiness; violence; poverty; and most of all, my tendencies toward inertia.
