THE HIGHLIGHTS STORYLa leyenda de The Highlights se remonta, contra todo vestigio de épica, a una calurosa mañana de Agosto de 2005. Apenas un año antes, "Smooth Fingers" y "Blind" Willie habían coqueteado con la idea en plena gira del Maestro por nuestro país. Una peregrinación memorable gracias a la magia de cada concierto, a las limitadas comodidades de algunos de los hoteles que pueblan nuestras carreteras y a la hospitalidad de uno de esos amigos que responden cuando más los necesitas. Porque aquel Dylan tour ’04 acabó muy cerca de casa… Pero volvamos al tema. Como decíamos, Blind y "Smooth Fingers" afinaron juntos sus guitarras por primera vez en un par de sesiones de resaca. La rudimentaria casete en la que dejaron registrado aquel embrión Highlight acabó extraviándose y hoy tendría un valor documental incalculable de ser recuperada…El caso es que pocos días después de aquello, las vidas de nuestros héroes se cruzaron con la de Mike "Broken Lips", el que habría de convertirse en benjamín del grupo. Y ya nada volvió a ser igual. Tras meses de mero intercambio pirateril, el entusiasmo del joven Mike, que desde un principio ofreció su casa como centro de operaciones, desencadenó lo inevitable. Por ninguna razón en particular, The Man In Me fue el primer homenaje grabado aquel sábado de agosto por la mañana en el entrañable cuarto conocido ahora como el Studio One coruñés. Habían nacido The Highlights…El estreno en vivo de la banda se produjo el 24 de mayo de 2005, el mismo día en que Bob Dylan cumplía 65 años. No podía ser de otro modo. Aquella noche, el bar La Silla Colorada, en las inmediaciones de la estación de ferrocarril (otro poderoso símbolo dylanita), se transformó en el neoyorquino Café Wha. Arrancaron con Highway 61 Revisited y cerraron, a petición del respetable, con Like A Rolling Stone. Durante los cinco meses posteriores, The Highlights le cogieron gusto al escenario y tocaron allí donde se les permitió hacerlo, a razón de una vez por semana y hasta completar veinte actuaciones. Algunas de las más memorables tuvieron lugar cientos de kilómetros al sur de la ciudad. Fue entonces cuando se les unió un nuevo Highlight, “Old” John Birch, el más veterano de toda la familia. John, un músico de contrastada trayectoria con quien “Blind” había visto por primera vez en directo a Bob Dylan allá por 1993, tenía aparcado su último proyecto desde hacía ya más tiempo del debido. Sabía tocar el bajo y hacer coros en falsete. Y eso era exactamente lo que los Highlights necesitaban para seguir creciendo… … Pero el clan aún no estaba completo. Los renacidos Highlights tuvieron que buscar en el “más allá” la pieza que les faltaba. Un buen día creyeron escuchar un ritmo envolvente e hipnótico. Y sus pasos se dirigieron hacia la remota Bérgida. Y fue allí, al abrigo de milenarias pallozas y entre nieblas relajantes, donde encontraron al Hombre Delgado aporreando su caja y sus platos.Against any trace of epic, The Highlights’ legend wrote its first page on a hot August morning in 2005. barely one year before, “Smooth Fingers” and “Blind” Willie had flirted with the idea during The Master’s Spanish tour. That was a memorable pilgrimage, due to the magic of each concert, the limited facilities of some hotels on the road and the hospitality she received from one of those friends you can count on whenever you need them. Cause that Dylan Tour ’04 ended really near home… But let’s go back to the point. As we said before, “Blind” and “Smooth” tuned their guitars together for the first time on a couple of hangover sessions. The ancient cassette where they recorded that Highlight embryo is currently missing and its documental value, in case it was recovered, would be huge.A few days after that, our heroes cross their path with Mike “Broken Lips”, the guy who would became the youngest member of the band. And from then on, nothing was the same. After some months exchanging their bootleg records, the young Mike’s enthusiasm (he offered his house from the very beginning as operation center) unleashed what was inevitable. For no reason in particular, The Man In Me was the first tribute track they recorded on that saturday August morning inside that close room that we know today as the Corunna Studio One. The Highlights were born…The live premiere of the band took place on May 24th 2005, the day Bob Dylan was 65 five years old. It couldn’t be any other way. That night, bar La Silla Colorada, in the railroad station area (another powerful dylanesque symbol) transformed into NYC’s Café Wha. They started with Highway 61 Revisited and ended, satisfaying audience’s demand, with Like A Rolling Stone. The Highlights found their place on stage and played everywhere they were allowed to for the next five months, once a week and until they got twenty gigs. Some of the more memorable nights took place hundreds of miles down south the city. It was then when a new Highlight joined the band, “Old” John Birch, family’s eldest member. John was a renowned musician. He and “Blind” had seen together Bob Dylan live for the first time in 1993. John’s last project was frozen, he could play the bass guitar and sing falsetto chorus. And that was exactly what The Highlights need to keep growing… But the family was not complete yet.Born Again Highlights had to look for their last piece "far away" and beyond. Their footsteps lead them to remote Bergida. And it was right there, among ancient rural cabins and relaxing fogs, where they found Thin Man beating his drums...IMPORTANT NOTE: The sound clips above are intended to promote local shows, and remain up only for a short time.
