If you are like me, you were probably taught to go to college for 4 years, graduate, get a nice so-called “secure” job with different benefits like health insurance, dental, stock options, 401K, etc. then, work really hard for 30 to 40 years so you can live off your retirement fund before your *mediocre* life ends. (only slighty sarcastic) WELL, Guess What? I was told this too!! This was not the route that I wanted to go, and I knew there had to be another way………

I was raised in a small town in Eastern Washington called Metaline Falls. Now when I say small, I mean really small. There were three towns in the area that all went to the same High School, and I graduated with only 19 people in my class.

I have been an Entrepreneur since I was a small child. I started with a lemonade stand in downtown Metaline Falls at the age of 6 and really learned at that time how much I loved to make money. Fourth grade through Sixth grade I had my own paper route which I did everyday except for Sunday. So right after school, I would deliver my papers usually with the help of my friends--giving them a little compensation of course.
When I turned 8 years old, I joined the local Pee-Wee baseball team and came to find out that I had a pretty good arm. My father being the fanatic that he was got very excited about this and decided that I was going to grow up to be a pitcher in the Major Leagues. He was a school teacher, so having the same schedule as me, we practiced baseball; hour a day right after my paper route from the time the snow melted until there was snow on the ground again. There were definitely times when I wanted to skip practice but that rarely happened. Looking back on it as an adult, I am grateful that my father taught me to have such a strong work ethic and to work hard to accomplish my dreams.
When I was 13-15, I played baseball in a neighboring town that was about an hour away. Being from such a small community, we did not have a summer baseball program for that age group. My dad was still very committed to me being successful in baseball and did what it took to allow me to work towards my dream. I was chosen for the All Star team all three years, and we placed 5th in state all three of those years. Even though we were never state champions, it was always a fun experience just making it to the state tournament.
When I was 16-18, I played summer ball on an All Star team in Trail, British Columbia. Yes, I played ball with the Canadians. That was a wonderful experience. Not only did we have a very successful team, but we got to travel all over Canada. When I was 18, we won the B.C. Provincial tournament (the Canadian Version of State), and I was named the M.V.P. of the entire tournament. That was my greatest accomplishment in baseball.
After High School, I was offered a full ride scholarship to a smaller four-year college in Spokane WA. I was told that I would be red shirted my first year because they already had two left handed Senior pitchers. Well because I was young and stupid and wasn’t ok with being red shirted, I turned down that offer and went to play for a Community College.
I played there for two years and majored in getting drunk and developed a serious drinking problem. My skill as a baseball player was decreasing as my tolerance for alcohol was increasing. I eventually was in a serious drinking and driving accident that ended my baseball career. I was a complete mess and headed down a bad road until I met my wife Michelle. I knew she was the girl for me, and we were married 6 months after we met.
We lived in her small town of Priest River ID for about 6 months. I worked in a local saw mill, and she worked for the Priest River hardware store. We then moved to Spokane WA where Michelle got a great job with the State working for the DSHS. I got a job with a local landscape company and thought I had found my calling in life.
I fell in love with natural pruning and excelled at it. My new dream was to own my own landscaping company and that was how I was going to be successful. Well it didn’t take me long to realize that I didn’t want to have to deal with everything that I saw the owner of this company having to deal with. It was getting harder to find good help and gas prices were at an all time high. So I just settled for being a foreman and became a dedicated blue collar worker. I worked really hard and was paid pretty well, so I was happy. (I had settled for working hard for the company owner's dreams.)
Then a few days after I turned 30, my father was hit by a car in a crosswalk. After 3 days of brain surgeries, he passed on, and I was devastated. After about a year, I decided that I was not going to be able to provide the quality of life that I wanted to for my family, so I decided to work from home.
Just 3 years after making that life changing decision, my wife and I are both home full time, and we have a quality of life like I never even imagined. We have the time and the money to do the things in life that are important to us.

I still work very hard, but I am my own boss--and it is for my dream not for someone else. Just like when I was a child, I learned how to dream again.
