We are known as "The Region of the Moundbuilders". This is the name of our Native American Gathering we hold in Newark, Ohio. We have held the gathering here for the last 5 years. We are attempting our first spring gathering in March of 2008, and we will again hold the gathering on August 23 & 24, 2008. Our gatherings are open to all nations, and we hope more Native American individuals will come and participate in our gathering. In 2007, we had 6 drums and over 50 dancers. The event took place in August at the local park. We are looking forward to another successful gathering 2008.
A little background of the Newark, Ohio area. We are located in central Ohio, sitting between Columbus and Zanesville. We are known for the Octagon Mounds that run through our town. The Octagon Mounds are up for placement in the World Heritage listing. These mounds are the burial sites of the Hopewell Indians that inhabited the area thousands of years ago. The mounds run all through our town and continue on through Ohio and down to South America. We are hoping some day to hold our gatherings in the center of the mounds.
