Audacious is an inspired bit of wordplay for a title, given DJ/producer Dave Audé's surname. But other adjectives sum up the vibe of his debut mix CD for KOCH just as neatly. Rambunctious, for instance. Because over the course of thirteen cuts, Audé is rarely content to remain in one musical area very long."My sets tend to be eclectic," says Dave. Hammering away at the same particular sonic niche for three hours is not his idea of a good time. "I try to run the gamut." He brings that same willingness to cover vast territory into play on Audacious. "It's not just one particular sound for 74 minutes straight. You get a little bit of this, a little bit of that just like when you come hear me play live."Rather than tease the listener with an extended build at the introduction, Dave starts off with a bang, showcasing the sexy and sinewy Cabin Crew remix of the uplifting vocal cut "Common Ground," a recent collaboration with longtime friend (and KOCH label-mate) Tall Paul and singer Sisely Treasure. From there, he immediately takes a hard turn, veering into dance-rock territory, via David Garcia's thumping "Too Good" and a remix of "Paralyzed" by L.A. act Rock Kills Kid; the latter throbs with new wave bass and a stick-in-yer-craw guitar line that slices through the groove."Common Ground" is one of two selections licensed from Dave's own label, Audacious Records. The second is his own remix of "The Other Side" by Cyclone Rangers, a slow-burner that starts off dark-and-slinky, then builds in excitement. In between, "Insatiable" by Mark Knight featuring Katherine Ellis provides a pivotal centerpiece for the set; a slab of unchecked vitality, it was one of the few cuts Dave knew he wanted to feature before he began programming the set."I've always just DJ-ed by the seat of my pants," he explains. "I just go with whatever I'm feeling. And I did the CD the same way, although when you listen to it, it does make sense: Starting out with a groovy, vocal track, then going into rock it all leads somewhere. This isn't just a bunch of popular tracks thrown together. But it wasn't a terrifically deep process, either. It was more like asking, 'What do I have to work with, and what is the best way to get these on CD, and give someone a really fun 74-minute listen?'"In Dave's case, what he has to work with his secret weapons, as it were is a terrific stash of just-completed or work-in-progress remixes. Over the years, Dave has had an impressive sixteen ..1 singles on the Billboard Dance Chart, including remixes for acts such as Coldplay, Gorillaz, Pussycat Dolls, Alanis Morissette, Britney Spears, and Sting. More recently, he's overhauled cuts for Korn, rising hip-hop star Avant, and even Paris Hilton. But his influence extends beyond the pop sphere; when big-name colleagues like DJ Dan or Paul Oakenfold want a fresh take on their own material, Dave is one of the rare trusted souls to whom they turn.In addition to his take on Cyclone Rangers, Audacious showcases Dave's talents as a remixer via his climatic Acid Funk Dub of "All About Us," retaining the apocalyptic pop majesty of the original t.A.T.u. single while goosing it with a slew of squelchy acid FX. "If you listen to just about any of my remixes, I always try to keep aspects of the original song intact," the producer notes of his aesthetic when handling other artists' material. "I don't chop things up until the song is unrecognizable. I'm trying to give the original a club feel, but, at the same time, when people hear that track on the dance floor, I want them to recognize it."Since the early '90s, when he first emerged as a member of Lunatic Fringe and in-house producer at Moonshine Music, Dave Audé has progressed through a variety of sounds and styles. If you caught him at the turn of the 20th century, you would have heard rapid-fire tempos of 135 beats-per-minute and upwards. But nowadays, Dave prefers to stretch out, take his time, and explore more nuances. "My sound is always changing," he admits. "It's whatever is exciting me, production-wise and musically." But regardless of the specifics, Dave consistently picks records of substance, with staying power to stick in the memory past Sunday morning. And in the fast-moving, trend-driven world of club music, that unwavering commitment to quality is definitely well, Audacious.
