About Me

"I have to remind myself that some birds aren't meant to be caged, that's all. Their feathers are just too bright... and when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice... but still, the place you live is that much more drab and empty that they're gone. I guess I just miss my friend. " ~ Red ~

The Rhythm of It...
I saw you lastnight,
in the witching hour held fast in crimson black,
and I think there has never been a time that I did not--
in deep midnight's, warm, dew-tranced, thick and pressing,
as if caressing all who move--
with parting lips, and shaping fingertips, almost touch you.
If you should wake,
amidst the dew, but lean, or smile,
and feel the heart that is the rhythm of your night.

"In Germany they first came for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Catholics,

Then they came for me —
and by that time no one was left to speak up."

When I despair, I remember that all through history the ways of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants, and
murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the
end they always fall. Think of it--always.

Every day, priests minutely examine the Law

And endlessly chant complicated sutras.

Before doing that, though, they should learn

How to read the love letters sent by the wind

and rain, the snow and moon.

Primal Stance

By Penny Novak (Another of My Sisters/Heroes)

What I am for has no geography.

No, nor is it owned

By heads of state or eclesiastic power.

It has been claimed

By liars who bedazzle us

Who, wild with pride, have painted

Desolation with a brush of fire

In its name.

Do not listen to their rousing call.

They lie.

The sweet infant scent in a mothers arms

Is not theirs.

The rooting corn, the bursting vine

Rest better when politics is dead.

I say "Do not follow nationalism

But love your home

And your own land-framed sky.

Laugh with your children,

Reach out to friends.

There is no grander gift

Than a kindly ear,

A gentle touch.

What I am "for" has no doctrine.

I will not be swayed by priests nor kings

But by the sleepy chanting of old tunes

Around a summer campfire,

The sound of distant geese

Following stars.

The Gentle Art of Blessing

Pierre Pradervand

On awakening, bless this day, for it is already full of unseen good which your blessings will call forth; for to bless is to acknowledge the unlimited good that is embedded in the very texture of the universe and awaiting each and all.

On passing people in the street, on the bus, in places of work and play, bless them. The peace of your blessing will accompany them on their way and the aura of its gentle fragrance will be a light to their path. On meeting and talking to people, bless them in their health, their work, their joy, their relationships to God, themselves, and others. Bless them in their abundance, their finances...bless them in every conceivable way, for such blessings not only sow seeds of healing but one day will spring forth as flowers of joy in the waste places of your own life. As you walk, bless the city in which you live, its government and teachers, its nurses and streetsweepers, its children and bankers, its priests and prostitutes. The minute anyone expresses the least aggression or unkindness to you, respond with a blessing: bless them totally, sincerely, joyfully, for such blessings are a shield which protects them from the ignorance of their misdeed, and deflects the arrow that was aimed at you. To bless means to wish, unconditionally, total, unrestricted good for others and events from the deepest wellspring in the innermost chamber of your heart: it means to hallow, to hold in reverence, to behold with utter awe that which is always a gift from the Creator. He who is hallowed by your blessing is set aside, consecrated, holy, whole. To bless is yet to invoke divine care upon, to think or speak gratefully for, to confer happiness upon - although we ourselves are never the bestower, but simply the joyfull witnesses of Life's abundance. To bless all without discrimination of any sort is the ultimate form of giving, because those you bless will never kmow from whence came the sudden ray of sun that burst through the clouds of their skies, and you will rarely be a witness to the sunlight in their lives. When something goes completely askew in your day, some unexpected event knocks down your plans and you too also, burst into blessing: for life is teaching you a lesson, and the very event you believe to be unwanted, you yourself called forth, so as to learn the lesson you might balk against were you not to bless it. Trials are blessings in disguise, and hosts of angels follow in their path. To bless is to acknowledge the omnipresent, universal beauty hidden to material eyes; it is to activate that law of attraction which, from the furthest reaches of the universe, will bring into your life exactly what you need to experience and enjoy. When you pass a prison, mentally bless its inmates in their innocence and freedom, their gentleness, pure essence and unconditional forgiveness; for one can only be prisoner of one's self-image, and a free man can walk unshackled in the courtyard of a jail, just as citizens of countries where freedom reigns can be prisoners when fear lurks in their thoughts. When you pass a hospital, bless its patients in their present wholeness, for even in their suffering, this wholeness awaits in them to be discovered. When your eyes behold a man in tears, or seemingly broken by life, bless him in his vitality and joy: for the material senses present but the inverted image of the ultimate splendor and perfection which only the inner eye beholds. It is impossible to bless and to judge at the same time. So hold constantly as a deep, hallowed, intoned thought that desire to bless, for truly then shall you become a peacemaker, and one day you shall, everywhere, behold the very face of God.

(How We Became Human)

Silence, they say, is the voice of complicity.

But silence is impossible.

Silence screams.

Silence is a message, just as doing nothing is an act.

Let who you are ring out & resonate

in every word & every deed.

Yes, become who you are.

There's no sidestepping your own being

or your own responsibility.

What you do is who you are.

You are your own comeuppance.

You become your own message.

You are the message.

Steinbeck's Classic "The Grapes of Wrath"
I like old classics many of which are based on the plays of Tennessee Williams, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Rose Tattoo, etc. Then there is Robert Mitchum as the villian (shudder) as portrayed in Night of the Hunter and the original Cape Fear, which brings to mind Gregory Peck in To Kill a Mocking Bird...Loved Atticus Finch. Those kids were great in that one too. Was the visiting kid's character based on Truman Capote? I loved Paul Newman in Cool Hand Luke and have never quite gotten over that car wash scene and ALL of its implications.....
..
George Kennedy was fantastic!
Loved Marilyn Monroe especially in Bus Stop, Niagra, the Misfits, and Some Like it Hot...Jack Lemmon is an awesome comedic actor.
Loved him in The Odd Couple and Out of Towners as well. Each one named leads me to another classic so I will leave it alone.
"Harvey and I sit in the bars... have a drink or two...
play the juke box. And soon the faces of all the other people
they turn toward mine and they smile. And they're saying, "We don't know your name, mister, but you're a very nice fella."
Harvey and I warm ourselves in all these golden moments. We've entered as strangers - soon we have friends. And they come over...
and they sit with us... and they drink with us... and they talk to us. They tell about the big terrible things they've done and the big
wonderful things they'll do. Their hopes, and their
regrets, and their loves, and their hates.
All very large, because nobody ever brings anything small into a bar. And then I introduce them to Harvey...
and he's bigger and grander than anything they offer me. And when they leave, they leave impressed.
The same people seldom come back; but that's envy, my dear. There's a little bit of envy in the best of us."

"This hour in history needs a dedicated circle of transformed nonconformists. Dangerous passions of pride, hatred and selfishness are enthroned in our lives; truth lies prostrate on the rugged hills of nameless Calvaries. The saving of our world from pending doom will come, not through the complacent adjustment of the conforming majority, but through the creative maladjustment of a nonconforming minority."

The Blackbirds are Rough Today
lonely as a dry and used orchard
spread over the earth
for use and surrender.
shot down like an ex-pug selling
dailies on the corner.
taken by tears like
an aging chorus girl
who has gotten her last check.
a hanky is in order your lord your
worship.
the blackbirds are rough today
like
ingrown toenails
in an overnight
jail---
wine wine whine,
the blackbirds run around and
fly around
harping about
Spanish melodies and bones.
and everywhere is
nowhere---
the dream is as bad as
flapjacks and flat tires:
why do we go on
with our minds and
pockets full of
dust
like a bad boy just out of
school---
you tell
me,
you who were a hero in some
revolution
you who teach children
you who drink with calmness
you who own large homes
and walk in gardens
you who have killed a man and own a
beautiful wife
you tell me
why I am on fire like old dry
garbage.
we might surely have some interesting
correspondence.
it will keep the mailman busy.
and the butterflies and ants and bridges and
cemeteries
the rocket-makers and dogs and garage mechanics
will still go on a
while
until we run out of stamps
and/or
ideas.
don't be ashamed of
anything; I guess God meant it all
like
locks on
doors.

There Are No Sides to Peace
By Mary La Rosa
The years pass.
The poems continue.
Words string together
homage to Rachel
songs for Rachel
theatre about Rachel
not only anniversary
and memoriam
but constant
shining and reminder.
We do not forget
who are the peacemakers.
We do not forget
the actions they take
in the name of non violent peaceful struggle.
We do not forget
the injustice and the harsh penalties
towards those who stand unarmed but righteous
against the machines of war and occupation.
So many innocent broken bones and smashed lives!
between those who act and speak out against the violence
But, through the dark prevailing doom
wrought by bombs and Caterpillars
and weapons of any destruction
hate does not diminish
the life and spirit of
one who acted upon good and peaceful intentions.
Rachel who put her life's conviction
into daily practice
Rachel who moved bravely beyond
a more comfortable life
in order to sustain oppressed lives.
Rachel did not only pray
She became the prayer
the hope of the world:
There are no sides to peace.
Three years ago I stood with a small international group
including the Corries , Rachel's family,
friends and pagan activist Starhawk in a UN
office . Edward Said was to have been there but
his health was failing. After inquiring why
there was no investigation into Rachel's death,
a German National told us the grim news that
there is only ONE super power that
consistently vetoes, even investigation into human rights
violations. I knew this, yet it was stunning
to hear it from a UN official. After all,
I grew up in the late fifties during a time
when the US was always lauded for being the
shinging beacon of free speech and human rights
all around the world.
Presently I am confronted and affronted by the latest
development about a play about Rachel Corrie
called "My Name Is Rachel Corrie" and it's
removal from the New York Theatre Workshop.
Why is it that the folk with the biggest weapons and guns
are always in fear and suppression of the folk with the words?
I believe the answer to be that
words are ever so more powerful...so powerful
that they survive what guns do. Words live
on in the heart and mind and continue to inspire.
Words also can throw open a limited perspective
and provide greater understanding about human rights issues.
The following year I heard Cindy Corrie speak at a NGO UN
conference on behalf of the Palestinian people.
