Books and records!, my band (100 Proof), other stuff. Mostly rockin' and drinkin'. Belt buckles and bolo ties. High art and low art. Either one masquerading as the other. Tiki aesthetic. Guitars. The almighty Max Ernst!
Sarah Vowell, Martin Mull, Amy Sedaris, and someone who wants to play Chess.
I think Tom Jobim is one of the greatest composers of the Twentieth Century, but you can't go wrong with this shit:
This is my favorite album:
PLUS TONS OF ROCKABILLY, RnB, etc...you know, genuine house-rockin' music. Plus, lately I've been listening to The Cargidans, Charlotte Gainsbourgh, and this crack-head's pretty darn good:
King Creole, "Jesus is Magic" starring Sarah Silverman, All Coen Brothers movies, All Jim Jarmusch movies, all Christopher Guest movies, Terry Gilliam, earlier David Lynch, P.T. Anderson, Wes Anderson, Peter Jackson, Jane Campion, David Cronenberg, earlier Woody Allen (BUT - "Match Point" was wholly inconsequential), Tim Burton except for Willie Wonka which was total crap. Things involving Martin Mull, Don Knotts or Gene Hackman, that sort of thing. Office Space. Dune. Blue Velvet. Wild At Heart. Almodovar. The Aristocrats. Cabin Boy. Me You and Everyone We Know. Everything is Illuminated. Wet Hot American Summer. Slingblade. The Science of Sleep. A Christmas Story. Anchorman (the octagon!). Pan's Labyrinth, Shakes the Clown (the "Ben Hur" of alcoholic clown movies). 'Round Midnight. Under the Rainbow. Pootie Tang. Things written by Charlie Kaufmann. Things about WWII, crime noir, Hitchcock and things Hitchcockian, City of God, This is Spinal Tap, Most sci-fi even the bad ones. Unless of course Will Smith is involved. And I don't care what anybody says, the first Blues Brothers movie was great.
obviously the Sarah Silverman Program, but also Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Office (both), Strangers with Candy, Six Feet Under, Arrested Development, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Fernwood Tonight, The McLaughlin Group. Futurama was the best show ever. The new Battlestar Gallactica kicks ass.
Philip K. Dick, Robert Heinlein, Henry Miller, Kurt Vonnegut, James Ellroy, Joe Meno, Tom Robbins, Haruki Murakami, that sort of thing. Non-fiction too. "Cruel Shoes" by Steve Martin is the comedy bible - Makes "Shop Girl" look like a giant turd. And I'll admit it: The Star Wars Expanded Universe novels. If only the movies were half as well-written.
