About Me

I wear simple slippers settled sanctimoniously under soft, supple, streamlined suspenders. In all fairness, my entire life isn't slipper-based. Most of it, yes. We're talking 20 hours in the day devoted to slippers. But the rest of it, those all-important four, must be devoted to everything else. So, as I write this, I watch an episode of the West Wing and read about Antonin Scalia in the New York Times opinion section. I feel this says a lot. In a few days, I'll be digging to China. If you know anybody with a good pickaxe, tell them to look me up. They can find me by yelling, "Who wants a pickaxe?" Portland, Oregon has beautiful bridges, but I'd never want to be directly under them, as I would become cold and wet. Jeff Bridges is also beautiful, but I would LOVE to be directly underneath him. So I think he's a beautiful man, so what? I'm also wearing a cardigan. What are you wearing?Little men run for state senate and win, even in Peoria. Why can't we elect a President under 5'11"? Man, I wish we could have gotten Howard Dean a good pair of platform shoes.

I'd like to meet:

the great appreciators, the ones who sniff life like some sniff cocaine. the great appreciators sing the body electric every day as they climb lovingly out of bed. let me explain through an example: i have this fantasy of meeting an old man, with a grey beard, a tweed jacket and loafers sitting cross-legged under a tree. when i walk up to him, he immediately senses me, though i've made no sound. his eyes are reminiscent of the sparkle that comes when you squint at a light. they glow, with a fire that warms but never burns. when he sees something, a tree, a rock, a shoe, a face, a streetlight, he senses it all fully, every inch. the entire history, the smell, the taste, the mood. he loves every moment spent with whatever crosses his path. it can be seen in the serene, bu ever-aware smile he wears when he breathes in and the satisfied relaxation in his eyebrows when he breathes out. also, i'd like to meet Woody Allen circa 1977. do you think that might happen? because i still think it might.

Obama's Iraq Policy: Right in 2002, Right Today

The war in Iraq, this wasteful, impetuous, tragic mistake, has come to define our politics. It consumes the media and drowns out other debate. In short, it ranks among the major problems of our time. ...

On Martin Luther King Day

Senator Obama decided to use this most important day not for the sake of shrewd politics but for reverence and hope. He respected the sacrament of the civil rights movement. "I am humbled," he said,...

History Sides with Senators

As the 2008 presidential election nears, we're going to hear a lot of electoral "truths" thrown around. Some will say that context favors the candidate least like Bush. Others may argue that Karl Ro...

Against Absurd Attacks on Obama

These days, we find articles about Barack Obama everywhere. Most of these are positive, encouraging him to run and stirring up support. But this is a divided nation and not all writing will be friendl...

Still Crazy: Virgil Goode keeps the Republican message strong.

Congress is packed with wing-nuts. Overflowing. Anybody within 10 miles of Washington D.C. can smell them. Their hygiene is fine (most of them), but their bile fills the air. Not only that, it fil...
