'Whales and YOUth' is an online series developed by 16 year old marine activist, Nicole Mclachlan.
This program was created to educate and connect with the world's YOUth in making a difference to the world's marine environment.
The series will feature different episodes about a variety of factors that link with marine mammals; the issues surrounding them, organisations that are creating a better world for them, marine programs, and social events that impact the world's marine mammals and the YOUth of the world that must save them.
The first video was a big success, with mentions on The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW's) blog, and also a feature on Japanese Broadcaster NHK News for an interview.
To contact Nicole, email her on: [email protected] with any ideas for episodes, footage, or any general comments.
Thankyou for visiting and helping Nicole make the world a better place for marine mammals!

UPDATES!
May/June 2008: May and early June have seen a great start to a new whale season!
After numerous sightings during mid-May, the whales have officially arrived to the eastern coast of Australia, on their annual migration :)
(There have been sightings of Orcas and the unusual and world-renowned white whale 'Migaloo' off of our shores here in Australia.. which have both been encouraging signs!)
In some exciting news for whale-watchers of NSW, the city of Newcastle had a launch of a brand new whale watching cruise charter, upon which I attended (and we saw no less than three small pods of Humpbacks! a very encouraging sight so close to shore and so early in the whaling season!)
The boat (N'Joy) was skippered by Bruce Hodgkinson, who's friendly team made for a great trip!

January/February 2008:
A few new updates to report for the start of 2008!
Whales and YOUth founder Nicole Mclachlan will be joined by Sarah Pickering in the managing of the organisation! This team-up stems from Nicole and Sarah's close friendship and interests in the Marine environment. Sarah, 16, lives at the Pet Porpoise Pool, Coffs Harbour on the mid-north coast of NSW, Australia. Due to her father, Greg Pickering, being the caretaker of the park, Sarah has lived alongside the Pet Porpoise Pool's 12 seals and 4 bottle-nose dolphins all her life and takes part in marine animal rescues. Animals from The Pet Porpoise Pool are either rescued or born at the park, which has had many rehabilitation successes in the 35-odd years it has been running.
So we're looking forward to the help of Sarah, who is featuring alongside Nicole in the new Whales and YOUth episode, which has been filmed and will be ready shortly for uploading.. so stay tuned!
Also happening are plans for Nicole and Sarah to take on the media of Austraia in the hope of spreading awareness about the threats facing whales, dolphins and other animals all over the world. We feel that our story may help others to get involved with the education and spread of awareness that is imperative to fight what's going on.
Visit the Pet Porpoise Pool's website for more information: www.petporpoisepool.com
December 2007:
I have recently been trying to get celebrity-type people to hold up my "Stop Whaling" banner. The first time i tried this i was able to get a photo of Tim Lee and Biggzy (hosts of the populer Hot30 countdown Australia-wide) with the banner, thanks guys for that!
Tim Lee and Biggzy with a "Stop Whaling" banner:
This month will also see the second Whales and YOUth clip made and uploaded (sorry it has'nt happened sooner guys, year 12 exams has prevented Nicole from developing the video, however two videos should be uploaded very soon) which will feature the barbaric event; The Taiji Dolphin Slaughter, which happens in Japan every year for months!
Also plans for a demonstration against whaling are underway in association with Australian Teens Against Animal Cruelty (ATAAC; featured in Whales and YOUth's top friends, are a Melbourne-based youth organisation fighting against animal cruelty). This should occur in the coming months.
For more information on events and happenings, visit the Whales and YOUth blog.
The Taiji Dolphin Slaughter
Every year, from 1 October till the 30th of March, thousands upon thousands of dolphins are killed in the shores of Taiji, Japan.
This annual cull, sees that hundreds of cetaceans (from bottlenose to pilot whales) are brutally murdered for their meat, which in turn is sold in Japan. Reports have correctly shown, however, that this meat is in fact poisoned with mercury levels in the dolphins' bodies reaching alarming levels. The endorsement of this act by the Japanese Government is in effect, killing the consumers as well as the many thousands of amazing animals that are abundant in Japanese coasts.
More than 400,000 dolphins have been brutally killed in this way since the beginning of this slaughter, a few decades ago.
However, the only hope for these beautiful creatures can come in the shape of humans. Only we can do something to stop this barbaric event, and it must be done in numbers. The whole cull is for money. (dolphin meat fetching large sums, and 'cute' or 'good-looking' dolphins are chosen to be spared only to be sold for about $50,000 to Japanese and international aquariums) If the Japanese fishermen, government and people think that this event will jeopardise their reputation or economy, there is no doubt that this slaughter will be halted.
Public awareness has risen recently however, with more people urging media outlets to publicise this event. But MORE NEEDS TO BE DONE in order for this to stop!
The following video takes you into Taiji, where the slaughter takes place. THIS IS WHAT'S HAPPENING. THIS IS REALITY! Be warned of the graphic content of this video, but please watch it, we should no longer be ignorant of what's going on!

My Interests

In association with Newcastle Council, Australia, Kotara High School has adopted a Humpback whale through IFAW, Surfers for Cetaceans and the Oceania Project to create awareness for the 50 whales that the Japanese whalers plan to slaughter this whaling season.

Animal Rights!

Not only do we fight for the protection of marine mammals, but we are strong believers for animal rights, and feel that everyone should know what's going on!!!

Some of the issues that face today's animals are:
Whaling
Shark Finning
Live Animal Export
Dolphin Drives
Factory Farming
Seal Hunts
Over-Population of Domestic Animals
Killing Animals for Sports
Killing Animals For Clothing (Fur and Leather)
Animal Exploitation

We aim to let people know the horrors that today's society have turned a blind eye to.... until now!

One of the biggest problems we have in Australia is over population of pets. Thousands of healthy Dogs and Cats are needlessly euthanised every week. The video below is an example of this over-population, in only one animal shelter in America.. however the problem is the same all over the world.. and as a result, this animal shelter must euthanise over 100 animals a day.. THIS HAS TO STOP!

Spay and neuter your pet

The Canadian Seal Hunt

Every year the Canadian government which earns 16.5 million dollars in commercial seal meat and fur each year lets around 300,000 seals get clubbed to death, 95% of the harp seals killed are less than 3 months old. and will be left to die then rot, some baby seals may even be skinned alive! We need to help stop this cruelty, no animal should die for fashion.

The following video is a graphic look at the seal hunt. Again, be warned of it's content but do not
be dicouraged from watching.. Everyone needs to know what's going on!
