MISSION STATEMENT:
El Centro Cultural de Mexico is an alternative space in Santa Ana where the community can find cultural, educational, and artistic activities that strengthen their identities, develop their talents and develop a sense of leadership in their community.
By engaging Orange County residents and communities through community outreach efforts, it supports inter and intra-cultural interaction and dialogue among Orange County’s residents by creating a variety of programs which enables all people to explore their own heritage and culture. Through educational programming, which includes workshops in dance, music, art, and literacy, it promotes understanding and appreciation of the contributions of the many cultures in our region by sharing knowledge of Mexico’s rich cultural, and educational, and social legacy.
It seeks to be at the forefront of creating a strong ideological and cultural bridge to support bringing together a variety of cultural projects from Mexico and other parts of Mexico, Central and South America.
"The Centro has helped me discover more about the Mexican culture, my culture. I have discovered how great it is to be a woman of color, a Mexican. It feels neat when you can proudly say you’re Mexican. "

------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------------------
THE FOLLOWING IS OUR REGULAR, WEEKLY WORKSHOPS THAT EL CENTRO OFFERS:
Niños del Centro- Art Class
------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------

I'd like to meet:

People who support autonomous spaces like this one; people who support putting power into the commuity, Raza community at large, and recognize Culture as a valuble step towards this and also as a step towards resistance of our white-washing schools / society.

Music:

EL CENTRO has been a valuable DIY location for countless Punk Shows, HIP HOP, SON JAROCHO, CUMBIA, giving ground to the underground scene from local bands to international bands.
.. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- CDBABY LINK for SON DEL CENTRO: Mi Jarana es mi Fusil... --

EL CENTRO also has its own SON JAROCHO GROUP. following is a description:

Son del Centro is a group of companeros and camaradas who are students, musicians, activists, dancers, friends and organizers from various parts of Santa Ana, California.
The group was formed to create a space for youth to explore their traditions, creativity and consciousness, through son jarocho music. Inspired by the Jarocho groups from Mexico brought to Southern California by El Centro, this group of youth began attending son jarocho classes about two years ago, and fell in love with the music.
Soon they began performing at different events throughout Orange County.

Heroes:

EMILIANO ZAPATA

PANCHO VILLA

FRIDA KHALO

and every one of the dozens of community members who dedicate their time week after week, year after year, to EL CENTRO whether they are a 14 year old high school student donating time and spirit, or college students, or families from the communities.
