Sandy Rodriguez is an emerging xicana artist raised in San Diego, Tijuana, and currently resides in Los Angeles. Her installations, paintings, and performance pieces are strongly influenced by issues of place, culture and super heroes. In both her teaching and studio practice, Rodriguez incorporates contemporary art issues that relate to community history, social justice, and gender politics.Rodriguez has recently been awarded the Artist in Communities grant from Side Street Projects in Los Angeles and the California Arts Council and a selected as a finalist in MetroArt Nieghborhood Poster Series 2006. Selected exhibitions include LACMA, Intersection for the Arts, High Energy Constructs, Tropico de Nopal Gallery, Plaza de la Raza Boat House Gallery, and Coagula Projects.Sandy was a founding member of the GALA Committee, whose guerrilla artworks have been exhibited at Los Angeles' Geffen Contemporary@ MOCA and at various venues throughout Europe and the Pacific Rim, of which the project was documented by PBS in the series Art 21 www.pbs.org/art21/artists/chin/card1.html#.
