“Absolute Raw Energy - a little bit Muddy Waters and a little bit David Lee Rothâ€
- Drum Media, AUSThough serendipity played a role in TREVOR FINLAY's choice to be a guitar player at age nine, it is clear he found his calling. This Winnipeg born artist was exposed to the career for which he was destined through his parents’ love of music and his introduction to an “open jam†session at age 15. Throughout his high school years and thereafter, Finlay has played regularly, moving from one playing situation to another, refining his guitar skills and honing his tone and performance. Having studied the masters like Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon, he respects the traditions but refuses to be restricted to playing a traditional style.
A prodigious talent – singer, songwriter, guitarist, band leader – FINLAY fronts one of Canada’s most renowned electric blues/rock ensembles, the TREVOR FINLAY band. This talented performer epitomizes the words ‘power trio’ with a lineup of guitar, bass and drums. Avoiding “power trio†clichés, he opts instead for well-crafted and musically intelligent arrangements that expand upon the standard 12-bar foundation in new and creative ways, combining the styles of rockabilly, blues, rock, country and funk to create his own blend of high-energy music. Indeed, he may well have established an entirely new category within the Blues genre; one based on lyrical ingenuity and observational acuity, as he explores both the quirks of everyday life and the mysteries of the heart with wry, clever wordplay.
His accomplishments include a four-CD body of work (1998 debut MORNING MAN; BUMPY ROADS (2001); the all-acoustic HOME TONIGHT (2003); and his latest, SHOW ME WHAT U GOT; a slew of individual awards “Best Canadian Blues/Rock Artist,†and “Top Canadian Blues Guitaristâ€, from Canada’s REAL BLUES MAGAZINE, nominations for “Male Vocalist Of The Year†and “New Artist Of The Year†by Canada’s Maple Blues Awards and finalist recognition in the 2004 and 2005 International Songwriting Competition.
A successful touring performer, FINLAY has displayed his "unforgettable" talent on stages across Canada, the United States, France and most recently, Australia. The Australia tour resulted in a VioLap endorsement, a unique lap steel guitar from the prestigious Australian guitar manufacturers, Cole Clark Guitars. Endorsees include some of the world’s greatest musicians such as Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Xavier Rudd and now, TREVOR FINLAY.
Media acclaim has come from all corners of the globe and includes such respected publications as:
BILLBOARD/USA
(“A new wave of young talent from every corner of the country is moving onto Canada’s blues stage…(including) the TREVOR FINLAY band…â€);
BLUES REVUE/USA (“…Finlay is a capable guitarist whether using his fingers or slide…â€);
BLUES MATTERS/UK:
(“ … high quality musicianship, energy packed live shows and superb song writing skillsâ€);
SYDNEY BLUES SOCIETY/AUS
(“… great voice for blues/rock – strong and spot on, … Lots of big power chords and slide …â€);
THE OTTAWA XPRESS,
(“FINLAY's style is something to behold.....opting for a pulsating aural assault where you can see the steam billowing from his ears. He's a true original right down the lineâ€)
and many more. John Hiatt, James Brown, Booker T. and the MG’s, Kid Rock, Chris Isaac, Kanye West and guitar greats Johnny Winter and Buddy Guy are but a few this talented performer has shared stages with.
While FINLAY continues to tour and record he is also in demand as a songwriter in Nashville, USA with some of the top recording artists and songwriters in North America.
