Currently more than two million Americans are incarcerated. Recent newspaper articles described how 1 in 100 Americans are presently behind bars. With such staggering numbers, one thing is certain: just about everybody knows someone who has been incarcerated at some point in life, or they know someone who is enduring the pain and hardship of having a loved one in jail. Therefore, regardless of political affiliation, religion, race or gender, we believe that you will find common ground with those who have loved ones on the inside, and perhaps even with some who are locked up. We believe in equity and social justice. We believe the U.S. incarcerates far too many citizens, and we believe that through letter writing and positive relationships recidivism can be drastically reduced and human dignity restored. We help inmates make friends, find legal help, become educated, and find jobs. We do this by placing inmates' personal ads, legal ads, and résumés on our site so that people on the outside can meet them, read their stories, and write to them. More than 90 percent of inmates will be released eventually. Why not take steps to make sure they return to us as positive, determined people who will work hard to keep their lives on track?
WriteAPrisoner.com is an organization established in October 2000 designed to help inmates find new contacts outside of prison walls, establish employment upon release, obtain educational opportunities, and ultimately, reduce recidivism. Letters are the primary source of communication inmates have with the outside world. These people are seeking friendship and encouragement through online ads. Correspondence has achieved many desired outcomes- lasting friendship, jobs, educational opportunities, a place to live - all critical in reducing recidivism and helping these people reenter society.
With more than 2,000,000 Americans in prison today, this country is facing an incarceration crisis. The United States incarcerates a higher percentage of its population than any other country on the planet. Aside from helping inmates find friends and positive contacts on the outside, we're working on many other projects to help reduce recidivism. Stop by write a prisoner today. We have many resources for inmates and their friends and family.
